Introduction

Planets when placed in certain longitudes of the Zodiac or the Birth Cart receive extra strength
In other words, the planets become more powerful
For example, when Moon is placed in 3 degrees in Taurus
It is placed is in its exaltation longitude
And Moon becomes powerful in comparison to its placement in other parts of the Zodiac

Vargottama is one such longitudinal placement of the planets

Where the planets become more powerful

Meaning of the word Vargottama

The word “Vargottama” is made up of two words:

‘Varga’ and ‘Uttama’

‘Varga’

‘Varga’ refers to the ‘Varga Charts / Divisional Charts’

‘Uttama’

‘Uttama’ means elevated, heightened, superior

most elevated, excellent, excellent strength, very strong

“Uttama” means the Best.

When used in Vedic Astrological context, is therefore the best disposition of a planet in a divisional chart.

Number of Varga Charts / Divisional Charts

There are 20 Varga Charts / Divisional Charts in total

16 Varga Charts / Divisional Charts have been given by Parasara
And additional 4 Varga Charts / Divisional Charts have been added by Jaimini, the son of Parasara

Parasara in Bṛihat Parāśara Horā Sāstra, speaks about the Shodasvarga or the sixteen-fold division of a
rasi. Shodasavargas: D-1, D-2, D-3, D-4, D-7, D-9, D-10, D-12, D-16, D-20, D-24, D-27, D-30, D-40, D-45 & D-
60.

The additional 4 divisional charts were added by Jaimini, viz,

1. Panchamsha (D-5),
2. Shashtamsha (D-6),
3. Ashtamsha (D-8) and
4. Ekadashamsha (D-11)

2
‘Amsa’ in a Divisional Chart

When a Sign is divided

For example, for D-3 Drekkana Chart
A Sign is divided into 3 divisions
And each of the Divisions is referred to as an ‘Amsa’
And Each ‘Amsa’ is assigned a ‘Name’

And the Name given is the ‘Name of any one of the 12 Zodiac Signs from Aries to Pisces’

Each Amsa would be named after only ‘1 sign’ out of the ‘12 Signs’

Definition of Vargottama
Parameters for Vargottama

When a Planet is placed in the Same Sign

In the Birth Chart (D-1 Chart)

And in the Same Sign in any one the Varga Charts / Divisional Charts
That is, in D-3, D-4, D-7, D-9, D-10, D-12, D-16, D-20, D-24, D-27, D-30, D-40, D-45 & D-60
Or D-5, D-6, D-8, D-11

Then the Planet would be referred as a ‘Vargottama Planet’

Vargottama Lagna

The Lagna has also been included together with the 9 Planets
And if the Lagna fulfils the above conditions
Then the Lagna would be referred to as the ‘Vargottama Lagna’

Popular Definition of a Vargottama Planet or Vargottama Lagna

Out of all the Varga Charts

Only the D-9 Varga Chart or the Navamsa Chart
Is being used to fulfil the Definition of a Vargottama Planet or Vargottama Lagna

This has been the practice

The moment Vargottama is mentioned
What comes to mind is
the Planet or Lagna in D-1 Chart and the same Planet or Lagna in the D-9 Chart

Meaning,
When a Planet or the Lagna is placed in a particular Sign
In the Birth Chart (D-1 Chart)
And is also placed in the Same Sign in the Navamsa Chart (D-9 Chart)
Then the Planet or Lagna is referred as a ‘Vargottama Planet’ or ‘Vargottama Lagna’

Let’s Understand the Navamsa Chart (D-9 Chart) in greater detail
For All the 12 Signs

For Aries Sign

There is only 1 Amsa in Aries Sign

with the ‘Amsa Name of Aries’

That is the 1st Division

(Refer to Aries Sign in D-9 Chart below)

So if any Planet or Lagna in D-1 Chart is placed between

the longitudinal degree of >= 0⁰ 00' and =< 3⁰ 20'

Then that Planet or Lagna

Would be placed in the Sign of Aries in the Navamsa Chart (D-9 Chart)
And qualifies to be referred to as the ‘Vargottama Planet’ or ‘Vargottama Lagna’

If any Planet or Lagna is placed elsewhere in Aries

Then that Planet or Lagna would not qualify as a ‘Vargottama Planet’ or ‘Vargottama Lagna’

Vargottama Terminology not used by Parasara
Merely Indirect Reference to Vargottama

I was looking for explanations on Vargottama by Parasara

But I am surprised that Parasara has not explained the concept and application of Vargottama

Then I looked at the Vargas by Parasara

Chapter 6 explains the ‘16 Divisions of a Sign’
Chapter 6 has 41 stanzas but the word ‘Vargottama’ has not been used

Chapter 7 explains on ‘Divisional Consideration’

Where Parasara explains on the use of the 16 divisions
And again the word ‘Vargottama’ has not been used

Note:
Indirect reference to Vargottama combinations have been made
when terminology such as Shad Vargas, or Sapta Vargas, or Dasa Vargas, or Shodasa Varga
are being used as follows:

Page 88

In Shad Vargas, the Varga Designation of ‘Kimsuka’

Simply means that the Planet placed in D-1 Chart
Is placed in the same Sign (in the same Amsa Sign)
In all the 6 Vargas,
Then that Planet would be referred to as ‘Kimsuka’.

17
The word ‘Vargothama’ has been used in 2 places:
 In Chapter 12, titled ‘Effects of First House’, Page 129 Sloka (para) 10

In this para, the author under ‘Notes’ is explaining that the luminaries, that is the planets Sun and Moon
when in conjunction in the same sign should be also in the same pada (ie quarter)

This explanation does not teach the concept of Vargottama

 And in Chapter 36, titled ‘Many Other Yogas, Page 384 Sloka (para) 38-39

Page 383

Page 384
In this para, the author under ‘Notes’ is reiterating the definition of Vargottama
between D-01 and D-9 Charts

18
Finding
So from the above, it is clear, that Parasara did not elaborate further on the applications and
interpretations for planets and the lagna when in Vargottama between D-1 and D-9 Charts.

On the contrary, Parasara hasn’t specifically used the terminology ‘Vargottama’

It is the author, who translated Parasara’s work, who used the terminology ‘Vargottama’ under ‘Notes’ to
the translations to the respective slokas.

Parasara’s reference has been to ‘similar amsas’ between the various varga charts
which he has grouped as a group of 6, of 7, of 10 and of 16.

Understanding Strength of a Planet in Vargottama (D-1 and D-9)

Vargottama planet is said to give ‘double the results’ during its Mahadasha,
whether that is ‘auspicious’ or ‘challenging’
depends on what the planet signifies in your chart.

http://www.anahitarao.com/vargottama-planets-double-the-power/

Vargottama means that the planet has become ‘very powerful’ in the chart of the native.
Whenever a Planet is Vargottama
the qualities of that planet
will become the part of the Individual’s characteristics.

The Vargottama planet will be very strong

and it will help the Native with its own qualities.
The Native will be displaying the qualities of your Vargottama planet.

Native’s evident qualities will be the same qualities of the Vargottama planets.
Different planet indicates different qualities.
So, the nature of the Vargottama planet will change according to the planets.

Note:
From the above, when we say that the Vargottama becomes powerful
It is difficult to quantify the strength
Therefore, the word double is more applicable

Effects and Results of a Vargottama Planet

The general and popular understanding is that when a planet is Vargottama

It always confers ‘Positive’ or ‘Benefic’ Results

The Vargottama Planet has the similar acceptance like that of a Planet in Exaltation
That is, a planet in Exaltation always confers ‘Positive’ or ‘Benefic’ Results

Do refer to my Notes on Exaltation, for I tend to differ with this general view
My finding says that the exaltation point is an astronomical longitudinal position in the solar system
from where the rays of the planet reach earth in full intensity
But whether the rays are benefic or malefic depends on the Lagna in the Native’s Chart

22
In the similar manner and context I would look upon the Vargottama Planet
Because the placement of the planet
Within a defined longitudinal range in a Sign
Is what decides whether the planet is Vargottama or not

If, for the Lagna, the planet is a Functional Benefic planet

Then it would confer good and positive results

If, for the Lagna, the planet is a Functional Malefic planet

Then it would confer bad and negative results

And because the planet is a vargottama

The Benefic and Malefic Results are Doubled

Under Oocha Bala, we have discussed

how to compute the Strength of the Planets
by virtue of its placement in the Birth Chart
in terms of Virupas and in Percentages

Please refer to the Notes on Oocha Bala

So, if the Planet is Vargottama

The strength is 2 times the Oocha Bala Strength

Vargottama Planet in Exaltation
The Exaltation Point and the Vargottama Range
Are not the same for the planets within the Sign as follows:

Planet Exaltation Exaltation Degree Vargottama Vargottama

Sign Pada degree
Sun Aries 10 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Moon Taurus 3 degrees 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00
Mars Capricorn 28 degrees 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00
Mercury Virgo 15 degrees 9th Pada 26:40 to 30:00
Jupiter Cancer 5 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Venus Pisces 27 degrees 9th Pada 26:40 to 30:00
Saturn Libra 20 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Rahu Taurus Degrees not given 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00
Ketu Scorpio Degrees not given 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00

Note:
Venus is the only planet where the Exaltation Point falls within the Vargottama Range.
So if Venus is Vargottama in Pisces, the total strength would be 200%
Exaltation strength would be 100% and Vargottama doubles the strength

For the other planets, the Exaltation strength would be lesser than 100%
for details, we have to refer to Notes on Oocha Bala and then double the percentage

Vargottama Planet in Debilitation

The Debilitation Point and the Vargottama Range
Are not the same for the planets within the Sign as follows:

Planet Debilitation Debilitation Degree Vargottama Vargottama

Sign Pada degree
st
Sun Libra 10 degrees 1 Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Moon Scorpio 3 degrees 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00
Mars Cancer 28 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Mercury Pisces 15 degrees 9th Pada 26:40 to 30:00
Jupiter Capricorn 5 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Venus Virgo 27 degrees 9th Pada 26:40 to 30:00
Saturn Aries 20 degrees 1st Pada 0:00 to 3:20
Rahu Scorpio Degrees not given 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00
Ketu Taurus Degrees not given 5th Pada 13:20 to 16:00

Note:
Venus is the only planet where the Debilitation Point falls within the Vargottama Range.
So if Venus is Vargottama in Virgo, the total strength would still be 0%
Debilitation strength would be 0% even though Vargottama doubles the strength

For the other planets, the Debilitation strength would be slightly greater than 0%
for details, we have to refer to Notes on Oocha Bala and then double the percentage

24
Lords of Dustana Houses are Vargottama Planets
6th, 8th and 12th Lords

If the Lords of the Dustana Houses are Vargottama

Then the strength of the malefic energies are doubled

For Cancer Lagna, Saturn is Lord of the 8 th House

And depending on its placement
The Oocha Bala would be doubled

For Cancer Lagna, Rahu is Lord of 12th House

And is placed in Aries in the 1st Pada
And it is Vargottama

Aries is the 10th House of Career

The Career of the Native, who is known to me, has been very badly affected
Native is around 52 years old when these Notes were prepared in 2020.
He was in employment and resigned to venture into business during his Mars Mahadasa
He failed in the business, though in the beginning it was promising
Then he was unemployed for 7 years
And went back into employment which he lost due to his ferocious anger
Presently, running Rahu Mahadasa and is still struggling in his career
