Introduction
Planets when placed in certain longitudes of the Zodiac or the Birth Cart receive extra strength
In other words, the planets become more powerful
For example, when Moon is placed in 3 degrees in Taurus
It is placed is in its exaltation longitude
And Moon becomes powerful in comparison to its placement in other parts of the Zodiac
‘Varga’
‘Uttama’
Parasara in Bṛihat Parāśara Horā Sāstra, speaks about the Shodasvarga or the sixteen-fold division of a
rasi. Shodasavargas: D-1, D-2, D-3, D-4, D-7, D-9, D-10, D-12, D-16, D-20, D-24, D-27, D-30, D-40, D-45 & D-
60.

‘Amsa’ in a Divisional Chart
And the Name given is the ‘Name of any one of the 12 Zodiac Signs from Aries to Pisces’
Each Amsa would be named after only ‘1 sign’ out of the ‘12 Signs’
Definition of Vargottama
Parameters for Vargottama
And in the Same Sign in any one the Varga Charts / Divisional Charts
That is, in D-3, D-4, D-7, D-9, D-10, D-12, D-16, D-20, D-24, D-27, D-30, D-40, D-45 & D-60
Or D-5, D-6, D-8, D-11
Vargottama Lagna
The Lagna has also been included together with the 9 Planets
And if the Lagna fulfils the above conditions
Then the Lagna would be referred to as the ‘Vargottama Lagna’
Meaning,
When a Planet or the Lagna is placed in a particular Sign
In the Birth Chart (D-1 Chart)
And is also placed in the Same Sign in the Navamsa Chart (D-9 Chart)
Then the Planet or Lagna is referred as a ‘Vargottama Planet’ or ‘Vargottama Lagna’

Vargottama Terminology not used by Parasara
Merely Indirect Reference to Vargottama
Note:
Indirect reference to Vargottama combinations have been made
when terminology such as Shad Vargas, or Sapta Vargas, or Dasa Vargas, or Shodasa Varga
are being used as follows:
Page 88
17
The word ‘Vargothama’ has been used in 2 places:
In Chapter 12, titled ‘Effects of First House’, Page 129 Sloka (para) 10
In this para, the author under ‘Notes’ is explaining that the luminaries, that is the planets Sun and Moon
when in conjunction in the same sign should be also in the same pada (ie quarter)
And in Chapter 36, titled ‘Many Other Yogas, Page 384 Sloka (para) 38-39
Page 383
Page 384
In this para, the author under ‘Notes’ is reiterating the definition of Vargottama
between D-01 and D-9 Charts
18
Finding
So from the above, it is clear, that Parasara did not elaborate further on the applications and
interpretations for planets and the lagna when in Vargottama between D-1 and D-9 Charts.
Parasara’s reference has been to ‘similar amsas’ between the various varga charts
which he has grouped as a group of 6, of 7, of 10 and of 16.
Note: upon perusing the above texts, my observation is that just the Amsa Divisions have been
explained in the original texts. The meanings, or the inferences, or the explanations on the
possible results and benefits have not been given.

Vargottama explained in Brihaj-Jatakam of Varaha Mihira
20
Among the above few texts above
This is the text where I have seen the word ‘Vargottama’
Being used in the Original Sanskrit Sloka
Here in Sloka 14, the definition parameters have been stipulated precisely
That is,
for Movable Signs, the 1st Navamsa
for Fixed Signs, the 5th Navamsa
for Common Signs, the 9th Navamsa
the Navamsa Nama and the Sign Name are the same
The application or interpretation of planets or lagna in vargottama
Have been explained in a few areas
But the explanation is quite comprehend

Understanding Strength of a Planet in Vargottama (D-1 and D-9)
Vargottama planet is said to give ‘double the results’ during its Mahadasha,
whether that is ‘auspicious’ or ‘challenging’
depends on what the planet signifies in your chart.
http://www.anahitarao.com/vargottama-planets-double-the-power/
Vargottama means that the planet has become ‘very powerful’ in the chart of the native.
Whenever a Planet is Vargottama
the qualities of that planet
will become the part of the Individual’s characteristics.
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-significance-of-Vargottama-planets-in-Vedic-astrology
Native’s evident qualities will be the same qualities of the Vargottama planets.
Different planet indicates different qualities.
So, the nature of the Vargottama planet will change according to the planets.
William D. Martinez
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-significance-of-Vargottama-planets-in-Vedic-astrology
Note:
From the above, when we say that the Vargottama becomes powerful
It is difficult to quantify the strength
Therefore, the word double is more applicable
The Vargottama Planet has the similar acceptance like that of a Planet in Exaltation
That is, a planet in Exaltation always confers ‘Positive’ or ‘Benefic’ Results
Do refer to my Notes on Exaltation, for I tend to differ with this general view
My finding says that the exaltation point is an astronomical longitudinal position in the solar system
from where the rays of the planet reach earth in full intensity
But whether the rays are benefic or malefic depends on the Lagna in the Native’s Chart
22
In the similar manner and context I would look upon the Vargottama Planet
Because the placement of the planet
Within a defined longitudinal range in a Sign
Is what decides whether the planet is Vargottama or not
23
Vargottama Planet in Exaltation
The Exaltation Point and the Vargottama Range
Are not the same for the planets within the Sign as follows:
Note:
Venus is the only planet where the Exaltation Point falls within the Vargottama Range.
So if Venus is Vargottama in Pisces, the total strength would be 200%
Exaltation strength would be 100% and Vargottama doubles the strength
For the other planets, the Exaltation strength would be lesser than 100%
for details, we have to refer to Notes on Oocha Bala and then double the percentage
Note:
Venus is the only planet where the Debilitation Point falls within the Vargottama Range.
So if Venus is Vargottama in Virgo, the total strength would still be 0%
Debilitation strength would be 0% even though Vargottama doubles the strength
For the other planets, the Debilitation strength would be slightly greater than 0%
for details, we have to refer to Notes on Oocha Bala and then double the percentage
