seesaw?
2. A wheel and axle is used to raise a load of 490 N. if the axle has a radius of 15cm,
what force must be applied on the handle of the wheel 40cm long?
3. A wooden plank 3.5m long is used to load a 100 kg barrel to a delivery truck whose
floor is 1.5 m above the ground. What force is necessary to push the barrel to the
truck?
4. A 1.5 ton vehicle is to be raised by a jackscrew whose pitch is 0.4 cm. a. What force
must be applied on the lever arm 35cm long? b. What is the mechanical advantage
of the jackscrew?
5. A system of fixed and 2 movable pulleys is used to raised a 500 kg crate. What
force must be applied on the rope?

ENERGY

5. What is the kinetic energy of a 1 ton car running at the rate of 90 km/hr?
ANSWER KEY  POWER

1. 1000m3 – volume of water

25m – height

15min = 900 s – time

1st: get the mass through the density formula

Mass = volume x density = (1000 m3) (1000 kg/m3)

Mass of water = 1 x 106 kg

2nd: solve for the power with work = PE

Power = energy/ time

P = mgh /t

P= (1x 106)(9.8)(25) / (900)

P = 272,222.22 Watts

2. 80 kg - mass

(cos30o)(50m) = 43.30 m - distance

4mins =240 s – time

P = PE/t

P = (80)(9.8)(43.30) / 240

P = 141.45 Watts

3. 1.5 hp = 1119 Watts

2 hours = 7200 seconds

W=Pxt

W = (1119) (7200)

W = 8,056,800 J
4. maximum height

1.5 hp = 1119 watts

0.5 ton = 500 kg

20mins = 1200 s

P = mgh / t

H max = Pt / mg

H max = (1119 x 1200) / (500 x 9.8)

Hmax = 274.04 meters

5. maximum load

60 Watts – power

3 m – distance

¾ of a minute = 45 seconds - time

0.18 – coefficient of Friction

Pt / h = mg(coefficient)

(60)(45) / 3 = m(9.8)(0.18)

900 = m (1.764)

Mass = 510.20 kg

ANSWER KEY  WORK

1. L2

40 kg – m1

50kg – m2

2m – L1

(40)(9.8)(2) = (50)(9.8)(L2)

784 = 490 L2
L2 = 1.6 m

2. Fe

490 N - Fr

15cm –Ra

40 cm – Rw

FeRw = FrRa

Fe(40) = 490 (15)

(40) Fe = 7350

Fe = 183.75 N

3. Fe

3.5 m – L

100 kg – mass

1.5 m – h

FeL=Wh

Fe(3.5) = (100)(9.8)(1.5)

Fe(3.5) = 1470

Fe = 420 N

4. 1.5 ton = 1500 kg – m

1.4 cm – p
35 m – L

a. Fe2πL = Frp

Fe(2π)(35) = 1500(9.8)(0.4)

Fe(219.91) = 5880

Fe = 26.74 N

b. MA = Fr/Fe
MA = 1500 x 9.8 / 26.74

MA = 549.74

5. Fe

3 fix & 2 movable pulley

500 kg – m

Fr = nFe

(500)(9.8) = 5(Fe)

4900 = 5Fe

980 N = Fe

ANSWER KEY  ENERGY

1. PE

50kg - m

250 m - h

PE = mgh

PE = (50)(9.8)(250)

PE= 122,500 J

2. PE

40 L – volume

15 m – height

mass = density x volume

m = (1kg/L)(40 L)

m = 40kg

PE=mgh

PE=(40)(9.8)(15)

PE = 5880 J
3. PE

10kg – m

(5m)(cos30o) – h

PE=mgh

PE=(10)(9.8)(5cos30)

PE=424.35 J

4. KE

500g = 0.5 kg – m

2m/s – v

KE = ½ mv2

KE = ½ (0.5)(2)2

KE = 1 J

5. KE

1 ton = 1000 kg – m

90 km/hr = 25 m/s – v

KE = ½ mv2

KE = ½ (1000)(25)2

KE = 312,500 J
