I. CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

ALHL-1055
Psychological First Aid
Prerequisite: Current employment by appropriate Corporate Academy
partner

The purpose of this course is to equip community support staff with the
necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide psychological support to
survivors of critical events (e.g. disasters, conflicts, accidents, etc.). The course
addresses critical skills that can make an immediate and lasting impact on a
person’s psychological health following a crisis. Application projects will vary
with the needs of the class.

II. GENERAL OBJECTIVES:


A. Describe the basic principles involved in the implementation of psychological
support

B. Describe the role of community responders in the provision of psychological


support

C. Use the terminology of stress and coping

D. Describe common reactions to loss, grief, and stress

E. Employ guidelines for the provision of psychological support

F. Communicate effectively in challenging situations

G. Describe communication elements that support resilience and self-help

H. Work with groups in a community setting

I. Identify when to refer people to professionals or organizations

J. Describe the factors that make a community resourceful, supportive, and


healthy

K. Develop ideas and methods to engage people and achieve participation

L. Describe effective interventions to assist vulnerable groups

M. Explain how stress may affect community support helpers

V. METHOD OF PRESENTATION:
A. Methods of presentation, although determined by the individual instructor,
traditionally include a combination of the following:

4. Interactive group activities

VI. METHOD OF EVALUATION:


A. Students will receive a letter grade for this course. Methods of evaluation,
although determined by the individual instructor/corporate partner, should
include some combination of the following:

1. Evaluation of contribution to projects

2. Evaluation of interactive group activities

3. Class participation and attendance

B. Students will receive a course outline/syllabus indicating the instructor’s


attendance policy, course requirements, and specific grading criteria.

VII. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:


Academic integrity forms a fundamental bond of trust between colleagues, peers,
teachers, and students, and it underlies all genuine learning. At WNCC, there is
no tolerance for plagiarism or academic dishonesty in any form, including
unacknowledged "borrowing" of proprietary material, copying answers or papers,
or passing off someone else’s work as one's own.

A breach of ethics or act of dishonesty can result in:


• failure of a paper or exam within a course
• failure of an entire course (blatant plagiarism, cheating on a test or quiz)
• academic suspension or expulsion from the college
