EXAMPLES-2.

Q1. A rectangular channel has a width of 2.5 m and slope of 1 in 400. Find the depth of flow if the
discharge is 10 m3/s. Use Chezy’s formula.

Solution:-
Let y = depth of flow. Given channel width, B= 2.5 m, then Area of flow,
A=Width , B x depth , y = 2.5 y. Wetted perimeter, P=B+2 y=2.5+ 2 y.
A 2.5 y
Then the hydraulic radius, R= = .
P 2.5+2 y

OR y −2.05 y −2.56=0 . Solving by trial-and-error, we get: - y=¿ 1.85 m

Q2. Water is flowing at the rate of 8.5 m 3/s in an earthen trapezoidal channel with bed width 9 m,
water depth 1.2 m and side slope 1:2. Calculate the bed slope if the C-value in Chezy’s formula is
49.5.

Solution:-

1 Z
z
Side slopes H:1V=1H : 2V
= ½ H : 1V
Given: Discharge, Q = 8.5 m /s, Bed width, B = 9m
3
Therefore, z = ½
Flow depth, y = 1.2 m, and Chezy’s constant, C= 49.5.
1
Flow c/s area, A= y (B + zy) = 1.2(9+ ∗1.2) = 11.52 m2

Therefore, 8.5 = 566.23√ S ; S= ( 566.23) =
