UNIT 3

DEFLECTION OF BEAMS
2 MARKS

1. What is meant by Deflection & Slope of a beam?

Deflection of a Beam : The deflection at any point on the axis of the beam is the
distance between its position before and after loading

Slope of a Beam : Slope at any section in a deflected beam is defined as the

angle in radians which the tangent at the section makes
with the original axis of the beam.

2. What are the methods to determine the deflection of beams?

The following are the methods available to determine the deflection of a
beam.
a) Double Integration method
b) Macaulay’s method
c) Moment area method
d) Conjugate beam method

3. What are the advantages of Macaulay’s method over Double Integration Method?
a)Macaulay’s Method enables us to write a single equation for bending
moment for the full length of the beam
b) Partial uniformly distributed loads (u.d.l.) and uniformly varying loads
(u.v.l.) over the span and a number of concentrated loads are conveniently
handled using this technique.

4. Define a)SSB b)CB

SSB:
A beam supported or resting freely on the supports at it’s both ends.

CB:
A beam which is fixed at one end & free at other end

5. Why is it necessary to compute deflections in structures?

Computation of deflection of structures is necessary for the following
reasons:
a. If the deflection of a structure is more than the permissible, the structure will
not look aesthetic and will cause psychological upsetting of the occupants.
b. Exessive deflection may cause cracking in the materials attached to the
structure.
For example, if the deflection of a floor beam is excessive, the floor finishes and
partition walls supported on the beam may get cracked and unserviceable
