Activity 1 - Expand Until No More!

This activity uses a balloon to model the expansion of the universe. Students inflate the balloon between measurements and record the increasing distances between dots on the balloon representing galaxies. As the balloon inflates further to represent the ongoing expansion of the universe, the distances between dots widens, and the dots will never collide as the expansion continues to increase their separation indefinitely.

ACTIVITY 1: EXPAND UNTIL NO MORE!

shdsOBJECTIVE: Describe the expansion of the universe using a model

MATERIALS: party or birthday balloon

Permanent marking pen (pentel pen)
Ruler
Yarn
PROCEDURE:

1. Inflate the balloon until its diameter reaches 4 cm. Keep the balloon tightly closed to prevent air
from escaping.
2. Make six dots using permanent marker in different parts of the partially inflated balloon as
shown. Label one of the dots “home” and the others A to E.
3. Using the string, measure the distance of each dot from “home”. Record the measured
distances in the table below under the heading “Time 1”. Succeeding measurements should be
entered under the headings Time 2, 3,4 and 5 respectively. Repeat this procedure five times.
Before measuring the distances, inflate the balloon with air so that its diameter increases by at
least 5 cm bigger than the previous trial.
4. Measure the length of the string with ruler. Express the length in centimeter (cm)

Note: Times 1, 2,3, 4, and 5 are the instances you inflate the balloon with air and then measured the
distance of each dot from “home”

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What did you notice with the distance of each dot from the “home” each time you inflate the
balloon?
2. How would you compare the distance traveled by dots near the “home” dot and with those that
are away from the “home” dot?
Note: The “home” dot represents the Milky Way galaxy where our solar system is located. Dots
A to E are the other galaxies.
3. What will happen if you continue to inflate the balloon? Is there a possibility that dots will
“bump” onto each other? Is it possible?
