01 DEFINITION

Paternal side
Paternal side relations means Father's side relations like Brother, Sister, Uncle(Chacha), Aunty(Chachi),
Grandparents(Dada, Dadi) etc.In this section, we have given Father's side relation questions.
To solve such type of questions, you first have to relate the members and then solve it.
Example :
To answer the question, read the information carefully :
The six members of a family A,B,C,D,E and F are travelling together.
(i) B is the son of C but C is not the mother of B.
(ii) A and C are married couple.
(iii) E is the brother of C.
(iv) D is the daughter of A.
(v) F is the brother of B.
Which of the following is a Father of F?
Answer :-
From 1st 1st statement

B −−−→ C B→(Son) C but C is not a Mother.


(Son)
From (ii), (iii) and (iv) statements,

E −−−−−→ C −−−−−→ B −−−→ A −−−−−→ D E→(Brother) C→(Father) B→(Son) A→(Mother) D

From (v) statement,

F −−−−−→ B F→(Brother) B
(Brother)

02 EXAMPLE

Maternal Side relation


Maternal side relations means Mother's side relations like Brother, Sister, Nephew, Uncle(Mama), Aunty(Mami),
Grandparents(Nana, Nani) etc.
Example :
Pointing to a person, Rohit said to Neha, "His mother is the only daughter of your father". How is Neha's
Father related to Rohit?
Solution :
As Rohit said to Neha that "His mother is the only daughter of your father".
It means Rohit's Mother is the only daughter of her Father.
But as Rohit said, Neha's Father has only one daughter, so it will be Neha only.

So, Neha is the Mother of Rohit.


And hence, Neha's Father is the Grandfather(Nana) of Rohit.

Example :
(i) A is the son of B
(ii) C, who is the sister of B has a son D and a daughter E
(iii) F is the maternal uncle of D.How is E related to F?
Solution :
From (ii)
C has 2 childrens D and E.
C is the sister of B and F is the maternal uncle of D.
So, F is also the maternal uncle of E.
Hence, E is the niece of F.

03 EXAMPLE

Generation relation.
This section contains the relation between one generation to next like children, parents, grandparents etc.
Example :
Pointing out to a lady, a girl said, "She is the only daughter-in-law of the grandmother of my father's only son." How
is the lady related to the girl?
Solution :-
As the girl said, her Father has only one son. So they are brother and sister.
That lady is the only daughter-in-law of grandmother of her Father's only son.
This means that lady is the only daughter-in-law of her grandmother.
Thus, that lady is the mother of the girl.

04 EXAMPLE

Paternal side relation


This is a paternal relation where the person can indicate to photographs or just do a verbal communication.
Eg:-
Pointing out to a photograph, a man tells his friend, 'She is the daughter of the only son of my father's wife'. How is
the girl related to the man in the photograph?
Solution :
As the man said, he is the only son of his Mother.
And the girl in the photograph is the daughter of the only son of his Mother.
So, the girl in the photograph is daughter of the man.

Eg :
Pointing to a man on the stage, Rashi said 'He is the brother of the daughter of the wife of my husband'. How is the
man on the stage related to Rashi?
Solution :
According to Rashi's conversation, that man is the brother of her daughter.
So, it means that man is son of Rashi.

05 EXAMPLE

This is same as paternal relation where the person can indicate to photographs or just do a verbal communication.

Example :
Pointing to Kapil, Shilpa said, 'His mother's brother is the father of my son Ashish'. How is Kapil related to Shilpa?
Solution :
Father of Shilpa's son will be Shilpa's husband.
Thus, Shilpa's husband is the brother of Kapil's Mother.
Hence, Kapil is a nephew of Shilpa.

06 EXAMPLE

Generation relation.
This section contains the relation between one generation to next like children, parents, grandparents etc.
Example :
Pointing towards a man in the photograph. Archana said 'He is the son of the only son of my grandmother'. How is
man related to Archana?
Solution :
As Archana said,"He is the son of the only son of my grandmother".
This gives a result that Archana's Father is the only son of her grandmother.
And as the man in photograph is the son of Archana's grandmother.
So, that man would be a brother of Archana.

07 EXAMPLE

Symbol relation
In this section, the relationship between two persons will be shown using symbols like $, @, #, % etc.

Read the following information carefully to answer the question.


(i) 'A $ B' means 'A' is the mother of 'B'
(ii) 'A # B' means 'A' is the father of 'B'
(iii) 'A @ B' means 'A' is the husband of 'B'
(iv) 'A % B' means 'A' is the daughter of 'B'. What relationship of 'P' with 'T' does 'P @ Q $ M#T' indicate?
Solution :
From (iii), (i) and (ii),
P is the husband of Q.
Q is the Mother of M.
So, P is the Father of M and M is the father of T.

i.e. P −−−−−→ M −−−−−→ T P→(Father) M→(Father) T.

Thus, P is the paternal grandfather of T.

08 EXAMPLE

Numbers relation
In this section the relationship between two people is denoted by numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
Example :
1. A 3 P means A is the mother of P.
2. A 4 P means A is the brother of P.
3. A 9 P means A is the husband of P.
4. A 5 P means A is the daughter of P.
What relation does M 9 N 5 K 3 J indicate between K and M?
Solution :
M 9 N - M is the husband of N.
N 5 K - N is the daughter of K.
K 3 J - K is the mother of J.
i.e.

M −−−−−−→ N −−−−−−→ K −−−−−→ J M→(Husband) N→(Daughter) K→(Mother) J.

Thus, K is the Mother-in-law of M.

09 EXAMPLE

In this section, the relationship will be given in words.


Example
Given that
1. 'A' is the mother of 'B'
2. 'C' is the son of 'A'
3. 'D' is the brother of 'E'
4. 'E' is the daughter of 'B'.
Then grandmother of 'D' is ?
Solution :

A −−−−−→ B A→(Mother) B
(Mother)

A −−−−−→ C −−−−−→ B A→(Mother) C→(Brother) B


(Mother) (Brother)

D −−−−−→ E −−−−−−→ B D→(Brother) E→(Daughter) B


(Brother) (Daughter)
Thus, D is the son of B and A is the Mother of B.
Hence, A is the grandmother of D.
