    11. EMBEDDED QUESTION


    “Embedded” berarti : melekat/menempel. Jadi, embedded question adalah
    pertanyaan yang ‘menempel’ pada kalimat lain. Embedded Question
    biasanya ditempatkan sesudah diawali oleh kalimat lain. Kalimat yang
    mengawali bisa berupa kalimat positif (ex. Tell me,… I want to know,… etc),
    kalimat negative( I don’t know…, I am not sure…, etc.), atau pertanyaan (do
    you know…, May I know…, etc).

    Perhatikan perubahan normal question menjadi embedded question berikut.


    (Pada embedded question, kalimat yg mengawali berwarna hitam) :

    Normal Question : What do you buy ?


    Embedded Question : Tell me what you buy.

    Normal Question : Where does he go ?


    Embedded Question : Do you know where he goes ?

    Normal Question : Who is he ?


    Embedded Question : I am not sure who he is.

    Normal Question : When will your father call you ?


    Embedded Question : I want to know when your father will call you.

    Normal Question : Where have you been ?


    Embedded Question : Tell me where you have been.

    Dari contoh-contoh di atas, bisakah anda simpulkan cara membuat


    embedded question ? yaitu sbb :

    1. Harus ada kalimat pembuka, seperti pada contoh-contoh di atas : Tell


    me, Do you know, I am not sure, etc.

    2. Jika pada normal question menggunakan auxilliary : do/does/did,


    maka pada embedded question, do/does/did itu dihapus. Tapi, verb
    harus kembali seperti bentuk kalimat positif. (jika does dihapus, verb
    kembali ditambahkan “s/es”, jika “did” yang dihapus, maka verb
    kembali menjadi Verb-2 (past form). Perhatikan contoh selanjutnya :

     Normal question : What do you buy?


     Embedded question : Tell me what you buy.

     Normal question : What does he buy?


     Embedded question : Tell me what he buys.

     Normal question : What did you buy?


     Embedded question : Tell me what you bought.
    3. Jika kalimat menggunakan “tobe” (is, am, are, was, were) atau
    “auxilliary” lain ( has/have, will, can, may, must, etc.), maka harus
    dikembalikan posisinya sesudah subjek.

     Normal question : Where have you stayed?


     Embedded question : I want to know where you have
    stayed.

     Normal question : What will they do?


     Embedded question : Nobody knows what they will do.

     Normal question : What can I do for you?


     Embedded question : Tell me what I can do for you.

    Exception :
    Jika normal question-nya adalah subject question (menanyakan subjek –
    biasanya menggunakan kata tanya “Who/what”) maka normal question
    tersebut tidak dirubah ketika menjadikannya embedded question, tidak
    perduli apapun tenses pada kalimat tersebut. (Hati-hati, yang saya maksud
    adalah “what” yang menanyakan subjek, bukan yang menanyakan objek).

     Normal question : Who come to your house?


     Embedded question : Tell me who come to your house.

     Normal question : What happened last night?


     Embedded question : Tell me what happened last night.

    SOAL TOEFL TEST


    Sering sekali dalam soal-soal TOEFL, embedded question ditanyakan. Jadi,
    jika dalam suatu soal, ada kalimat pembuka sebelum suatu pertanyaan,
    maka anda harus tahu bahwa itu adalah embedded question. Perhatikan
    contoh soal TOEFL berikut ( memilih mana pilihan jawaban yang secara
    grammar salah) :

    They asked me what did he buy last night, but I was unable to tell them.
    A B C D
    Answer : A.
    Explanation :
    Kalimat di atas adalah embedded question, karena ada kalimat pembuka “They
    asked me” sebelum pertanyaan “What did he buy last night”. Karena itu,
    penggunaan “did” pada kalimat itu menjadi salah. Seharusnya :
    They asked me what he bought last night, but I was unable to tell them.

    EXERCISE
    Change these normal questions into Embedded Question :

    1. Normal question : Why does she cry?


    Embedded question : Tell me .....

    2. Normal question : What is he eating ?


    Embedded question : He doesn’t know .....

    3. Normal question : When did he watch that movie?


    Embedded question : I wasn’t sure .....

    4. Normal question : What have you done ?


    Embedded question : Tell me .....

    5. Normal question : What should I buy tomorrow ?


    Embedded question : I want to know....

    Embedded question : I want to know What I should buy tomorrow.
