Science, Technology and Society: and Your CP Number

This document contains notes and activities for lessons on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), gene therapy, climate change advocacy, and nanotechnology. For activity 1, students are asked to define GMOs, list their advantages and disadvantages, give examples, and discuss views on genetic engineering. For activity 2, students are to make a flowchart of the gene therapy process and give opinions on gene therapy for human enhancement. Activity 3 involves creating a social media poster on community climate change mitigation. Finally, activity 4 requires completing a table on the benefits and concerns of nanotechnology applications in different areas like the environment, health, and economy.

LESSON NO. 1

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) are living organisms whose genetic material has been
artificially manipulated in the laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combination of
plants, animals, bacteria and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional
crossbreeding methods.

ACTIVITY NO. 1

A. How is organism genetically modified?

B. In a table form, give the advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified organism
(GMO)?

Advantages Disadvantages

C. List examples of genetically modified animals, fruits and vegetables.

D. Is genetic engineering a pure scientific process or it is indeed an act of humans playing God?
E. Research on the impact of GMOs on the ff. topics. Choose only one.
1. Golden rice of the International Rich Research Institute.
2. Genetically modified organism produced by Philippine researchers.
3. Issues on Philippine biosafety policies.

LESSON NO. 2

Medical science has detected many human diseases related to defective genes. These type pf
diseases are not curable by traditional methods like taking readily available medicines. Gene therapy
is a potential method to either treat or cure genetic – related human illness.
In 2015 a team of researchers at the Harvard Medical School and the Boston Children’s Hospital
stated that they were able to restore basic hearing in genetically deaf mice using gene therapy. The
Boston Children’s Hospital research team also reported that they have restored a higher level of
hearing – down to 25 decibels w/c is actually equivalent to a whisper.
Human gene therapy was actually first realized in 1971 when the first recombinant DNA experiments
were planned. It can be simply viewed as insertion foreign DNA into a patient’s tissue that hope to
successfully eradicate the target disease. It was actually inspired by the success of recombinant DNA
technology which occurred over the last 20 years. Without a doubt, gene therapy is the most
promising yet possibly unfavorable medical field being studied.

ACTIVITY NO. 2

1. Make a flowchart of the basic process of gene therapy. Explain each part of the process. You
may use you references for your guide.
2. In your own opinion, should people be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human
traits such as height, intelligence or athletic ability?
3. Would you subject yourself for gene therapy without its 100% assurance of effectiveness on
future negative side effects? Explain.

ACTIVITY NO. 3
Create an advocacy campaign by making a poster via social media that tells about how the
community will help mitigate the hazards caused by climate change.

ACTIVITY NO. 4
In a table form: State the Benefits and Concerns of the application of Nanotechnology in Different
Areas.

Examples of Areas Possible Benefits Concerns

Affected by
Nanotechnology
Environment

Health

Economy
