13

The Vimshottari Dasha system divides a 120 year archetypal human

lifespan into 9 Major Periods, one for each of the nine Grahas of
Jyotish. The Moon's Nakshatra position at birth is used for the
calculation if these periods, and they always follow the same
sequence as the planetary rulers of the Nakshatras.

The location of a person's Moon at birth determines where they begin

the sequence. Ketu is a 7 year period, Venus is 20 years, Sun is 6
years, Moon is 10 years, Mars is 7 years, Rahu is 18 years, Jupiter is
16 years, Saturn is 19 years and Mercury is 17 years.

Determine which Nakshatra the Moon as located in at birth. For

example, if someone has their Moon at 12 degrees and 26 minutes of
Virgo then the Moon would be located in Hasta Nakshatra.

Since the Moon is the planetary ruler of Hasta Nakshatra, someone

born with Moon in Hasta will begin their life in Moon Dasha, which
will invariably be followed by Mars, and then Rahu Dasha, and so
on.

Next we need to determine how many more degrees and minutes the
Moon would have to travel to reach the end of it's Nakshatra position.
In this example we would note that Hasta begins at 10 degrees and 00
minutes of Virgo and ends at 23 degrees and 20 minutes of Virgo.
14

Each Nakshatra is 13 degrees and 20 minutes or 800 minutes in

length. Since the Moon, in our example, was located at 12 degrees
and 26 minutes of Virgo the Moon had already completed 2 degrees
and 26 minutes (or 146 minutes) of the 800 minutes occupied by
Hasta- therefor 654 minutes, or 10 degrees and 54 minutes remain.

Divide the remainder (654 minutes) by 800 to get the percentage of

the period that remains654 divided by 800 equals: 0.8175

So, now we need to consider the length of the Moon period, which is
always 10 years.

So, 0.8175 of the 10 years of Moon Dasha would remain at birth, for
our example. So, we multiply the duration of the planetary period by
the remainder10 multiplied by 0.8175 equals: 8.175 (years)

Next we multiply the remainder (minus the years) by 12 to get the

months- 12 multiplied by 0.175 equals: 2.1 (months)

Finally we multiple the remainder minus the months by 30 to get the

days- 30 multiplied by 0.1 equals: 3 (days)

So, there would by 8 years 2 months and 3 days left of Moon Dasha
after birth for someone born with their Moon at 12 degrees and 26
minutes of Virgo (which is 2 degrees and 26 minutes into Hasta
Nakshatra). Thereafter the 7 years if Mars Dasha would follow, and
then the 18 years of Rahu Dasha, and so on.

Navtara Chakra based on 27 Nakshatra cycle

All 27 Nakshatra divided into a group of 9 heads, which are called

Tara. Each group has been given a name, which being a group of 9
head is called NAVTARA CHAKRA.

Nakshatra occupied by the birth or natal Moon is known as Janam

Tara (Birth Nakshatra) or for better understanding you can consider
this as 1st Nakshatra for calculation purpose, and to understand the
concept, which I am trying to explain herein. Few people also take
Nakshatra of ascendant or stronger Nakshatra between natal Moon or
ascendant as Janam Tara. But the best and preferable is to take Janam
Nakshatra for Navratra Chakra
1. Janam Tara:
Janam Tara (where moon is placed or 1st Nakshatra) and 10th and
19th Nakshatra from Janam Tara are also treated as Janam Tara. Any
planet occupying Janam Tara (1st Nakshatra) give ordinary results.
But planets occupying 10th and 19th Nakshatra from Janam Tara will
cause obstacle in their period.

2. Sampat Tara:
2nd, 11th and 20th Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Sampta Tara. As signified by its name sampat means wealth,
therefore, any planet occupying 2nd, 11th or 20th Nakshatra may
confer wealth, affluence and prosperity in their period.
3. Vipat Tara:
3rd, 12th and 21st Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Vipat Tara. As revealed by its name, Vipat means problem, obstacle
or misfortune, therefore any planet occupying 3rd, 12th and 21st
19

Nakshatra may create problems, obstacle and give misfortune in their

period.

4. Kshema Tara:

4th, 12th and 22nd Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Kshema Tara, which means auspicious. Therefore, any planet
occupying 4th, 12th and 22nd Nakshatra may give success in all
ventures and good results during their period.
5. Pratyari Tara:
5th, 14th and 23rd Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Pratyari Tara, which means enemy or opponent. Therefore, any
planet occupying 5th, 14th and 23rd Nakshatra may give
unfavourable results during their period. More specifically, planet in
5th Nakshatra may give quite bad result and planet occupying 23rd
Nakshatra may give worst result during their period.
6. Sadhaka Tara:
6th, 15th and 24th Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Sadhaka Tara. Sadhaka means achiever, accomplishing or fulfilling.
Therefore, any planet occupying 6th, 15th and 24th Nakshatra may
confer auspicious result and fulfil the desire and the native may
accomplish, what he has desired for. More specifically, the planet in
6th Nakshatra may give and confer success all around during its
period.
7. Vadha Tara:
7th, 16th and 25th Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Vadh Tara. As reflected by its name Vadha, which mean death,
therefore any planet occupying 7th, 16th and 25th Nakshatra may
give worst result including death of the native. More specifically,
planet in 7th Nakshatra is one of the worst tara out these there
Nakshatra.
8. Mitra Tara:
20

8th, 17th and 26th Nakshatra counted from Janam Tara are called
Mitra Tara. Any planet occupying Mitra Tara i.e. 8th, 17th and 26th
Nakshatra gives auspicious result during their period.
9. Atimitra or Parammitra Tara:
9th 18th and 27th Nakshatra are called as Atimitra Tara. As you
know, atimitra being the highest or superlative degree of Mitra, and
any planet placed in Atimitra tara or 9th 18th and 27th Nakshatra
gives the best result during their period.
Gochara(transit) Result from Navtara Chakra:
Any planet transiting 2nd, 11th, 20th, 4th, 13th, 22nd, 6th, 15th 24th,
8th, 17th, 26th, 9th, 18th and 27th Nakshatra from Janam Nakshtra
generally gives auspicious result. Planet transiting 1st, 10th and 19th
gives success after initial obstacles and hindrances. Planet transiting
over 3rd, 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 21st, 23rd, and 25th Nakshatras
from Janam Nakshatra generally gives bad results.

Please note, that the intensity of result may vary due to the placement
of any planet in auspicious house or sign for a particular ascendant
and receiving malefic or benefic aspects by other planets.

Ashtakvarga & Judging Transits and Dasas

While you are looking for transit results of planets (I see it form
moon/ chandra) and planets in followings houses are called
favourable as per classics.
24

Sun in 3 – 6 – 10 – 11 houses,
Moon in 1 – 3 – 6 – 7 – 11 houses,
Mars in 3 – 6 – 11 houses,
Mercury in 2 – 4 – 6 – 8 – 10 – 11 houses,
Jupiter in 2 – 5 – 7 – 9 – 11 houses,
Venus in 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 8 – 9 – 11 – 12 houses,
Saturn in 3 – 6 – 11 houses,
Rahu/Ketu in 3 – 6 – 11 houses.

There are total three types of Ashtakvarga charts.

1.Bhinna Ashtakavarga.
2.Prasthara Ashtakavarga.
3.Samudaya Ashtakavarga.
Each of these charts has its own use, which readers will come to know in
coming articles. A planet becomes highly beneficial if he secures 5 or
more bindus in its own Ashtakvarga. Where as a planet with less than 4
bindus acts negatively. Results of planets with specific numbers of benefic
points will be discussed later in detailed manner.

BHINNASTHVARGA
Bhinna Ashtakavarga is ashtakavarga of a individual planet.
The very first chart to be made in Ashtakavarga is Bhinna Ashtakavarga of
each planet except Rahu & Ketu.
Following method should be adopt to make Bhinna Ashtakavarga of
planets.
Though most of astrology softwares have ashtakvarga calculation in them.
But if you want to practice few manually, following procedure should be
adopted.

WHAT IS THE ASHTAKAVARGA SYSTEM?

This system is devised as a numerical scheme of interpretation

that lets us easily see a snapshot assessment of the strength of a
house thru a unique point system.

The Ashtakavarga system is a method of calculating the powers

of the planets relative to each other. Therefore, it can be used in
any chart i.e. all the divisional charts, along with Chaleta Bhava
25

charts (diurnal charts) and even with Horary Astrology. This

system also gives the power of each planet for all twelve houses.
For each and every house, all seven planets contribute their
power or strength in terms of numerical value. This makes it easy
to compare the powers of the planets for each house. There is no
other system which can give such a clear cut view of the
comparative strengths of all the planets

By employing the Ashtakavarga system along with other

principals, the following things can be determined with great
accuracy :

1) Predicting the general strengths of the planets and the

houses
2) Anticipating certain important events in a person’s life
3) Forecasting dasha results
4) Overall life readings
5) Profession of the person
6) Timing events for important results
7) Day to day power of the horoscope and results
8) Marking the evolution of the achievements in the life.
9) Prasna Charts
10)Political and Social forecasting
11)Transit results

The powers of the planets depends on its relative position versus

other planets. This can be judged at a glance the Ashtakavarga
chart. Making a judgment of the planet only by its sign or
placement in a particular house without considering the planet’s
power with respect to other planets doesn’t give an accurate
assessment of the overall picture.

In the Ashtakavarga system, the Ashtakavarga charts are cast

using the natal chart and the benefic points. The individual
Ashtakavarga chart is also known as the Bhinnashtakavarga. The
combined effect given in one chart is known as the total
Ashtakavarga chart or the Sarvashtakavarga chart. The individual
chart and the sarvashtakavarga charts are both required for
calculation purposes.
The total of benefic and malefic points in a house, for a planet is
eight. If the benefic points are known, then automatically we know
the malefic points. Eight minus the benefic points gives the
malefic points. The total benefic and malefic points in a house in
sarvashtakavarga always comes to 56. There are seven planets
and each contributes eight points, so 7 X 8 = 56. Hence, if we
know the benefic points, obviously malefic points are also known.
26

(56 less the benefic points= the malefic points). For example, if a
house contributes 28 benefic points, it means it still has 28 malefic
points remaining. Therefore the result of that house will be normal.
The house that gets less than 28 benefic points will give less of a
result as indicated by that house. Similarly if any house
contributes more than 28 points then the results denoted by that
house will be enhanced. The grand total of all the benefic points
distributed by the seven planets and the lagna always total 337.
The contribution of each planet is given in the Ashtakavarga chart
of that planet, as given below.

BHINNASHTAKAVARGA

The SUN distributes 48 benefic points to each of the following

houses from its natal position in the chart. Every other planet
helps to distribute the Sun’s overall points to their own assigned
houses below as it relates to their own natal positions

The total individual contribution of benefic points by any planet in

any horoscope will be the same as mentioned above. The sum
total of all the benefic points for all the planets will always be 337
for any horoscope. These figures do not change. These are
benefic points. There are seven planets plus the Lagna that
contributes to these 8 different reference points, and there are
twelve houses, hence the total points should be 12 X 8 = 96, for
each planet. These 96 points may be benefic or malefic. The fact
that Jupiter contributes a huge 56 benefic points out of 96 points,
means that 96 - 56 = 40 malefic points. That is the reason why
Jupiter is called the great benefic. Similarly, Mercury contributes
54 points, Venus contributes 52 points, and so forth.

Mars and Saturn however, give only 39 benefic points each, which
means 96-39 = 57 malefic points. Since the malefic points
outnumber the benefic points they are called malefic planets.
From the above, it can be observed that each and every planet
gives both malefic and benefic results. Because Jupiter, for
example, gives the maximum amount of benefic points, it is called
a benefic planet, while Saturn and Mars give more malefic points
and are therefore called malefic planets.

The above shows a basic ashtakavarga table before all the points
are filled in. The top row represents the houses in the chart. In
order to avoid confusion as to whether the top row is the house or
the numbered sign, I will add the names of the signs underneath
the houses. In this table, the signs represent a chart with an
ARIES lagna, but they will always rotate under the stationery
house signs in the top row, so that the proper lagna sign for the
chart will always go under the 1st house column. If for example,
AQUARIUS was the ascendant for the chart, then the order of the
planets starting under the 1st house house would be Aq, Pi, Ar,
Ta, Ge, Ca, Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Ca. The side row lists the 7 planets.
Each row will represent the individual planets’ point distribution
throughout the houses in a numerical value from 0-8, zero being
the weakest and 8 being the most powerful. At the bottom is a row
for the totals of all the points accumulated for each column. The
last column totals up the points in each row of planets. The
accumulated totals for both rows and the columns will always be
337.

Let’s take an example and calculate the chart of a male, born on

October 26, 1961 at 9:45am in Nagpur, INDIA, 21N09, 079E06.
Use the Ayanamsha of 22:17:42. The charts will be shown in both
Northern and Southern styles to accommodate individual
preferences.

Here we can see that all the planets contribute various points to each
house. Remember that minimum points can go as low as zero and
the maximum can go as high as 8. No planet can have more than 8
points to a house.

The numbers highlighted in red indicate the planetary positions in the

chart for that row as indicated by the planet to the left. For example,
we can easily see that the SUN is located in the 12th house and
contributes 5 points to this house. The MOON is located in the 7th
house and contributes 5 points also to that house and so forth.

Ashtakvarga Rules
1. Whenever 9th, 10th, 11th and 1st house are strong, ie, they have more
than 28 benefic bindus(dots), then the person will be rich.
2. If 11th house has more bindus than 10th house and 12th house has less
number of bindus as compared to 1st and 11th house, then the native will be
rich and have a luxurious lifestyle.
3. If 12th house has more number of bindus as compared to 1st house and
11th house, then the concerned person will be poor or he may go to foreign
land and earn there. His expenses will be more than his income.
4. If 11th house has more number of bindus than 10th house, then the native
will earn more as compared to the work done by him. The more the difference,
the more will be the earning power. This is the most important rule. I have
seen this rule applicable in the chart of famous and wealthy people.
5. If 10th house is strong and has more than 28 bindus and 11th house has
less than 28 bindus, then the native will face many ups and downs in life.
6. 12th house is of loss, isolation and foreign land. Generally it is seen that
whenever 12th house has more bindus as compared to 11th house, then the
native will go to foreign land and earn livelihood there. Or he may earn
through foreign connections.
7. If the total number of bindus of 1st, 2nd, 4th, 9th, 10th and 11th house is
more than 164 then the native will be rich. The bigger the number of bindus
above 164, the better the wealth and luxury.
8. If ascendant has minimum 30 bindus and there are planets sitting in the 9th
and 10th house, then the person becomes rich and happy in life.
9. If the 4th house has minimum 30 bindus and a benefic planet is associated
with it, then the person becomes rich and owns vehicles and houses.
10. If 11th house is free from any malefic influence and has minimum 36
bindus, then the person earns much wealth without any hard work.
11. It has been seen that if the person is having a very hard life from the birth,
then after the age which corresponds to the number of bindus in the 1st
house, the person will make progress.
12. If 2nd and 4th house both have less than 28 bindus, then it has been seen
that the person will get less or no inheritance from parents.
13. If 7th house contains more number of bindus than the 5th house, then the
person will have high authority and his subordinates will obey him.
14. If the 1st house has the highest number of bindus compared to all the
other 11 houses, then the person will have an attractive and magnetic
personality.
15. If 2nd house has the most bindus, then the person will have good speech;
if it’s the 3rd house, then good voice and memory; if 5th house, then good
intelligence; 9th house, then good luck; and 10th house – good reputation and
career.
16. When the total number of bindus of 3rd, 7th and 11th house are more then
the 4th, 8th and 12th house, concerned person becomes rich.
