Part I.

Acquainting One’s Self in the Workplace [15 points]


Directions: Read each item critically. Write TRUE if the sentence is correct and FALSE if otherwise.
Write your answer on a piece of paper, or notebook. Each item is equivalent to 1 point.

1. Vocabulary building is important in understanding academic texts.


2. Presenting a well - prepared cover letter is your first step toward employment.
3. An outline does not help a writer become more organized in writing.
4. Internet can be a reliable source of information, but one must always check the credibility of the
website first.
5. When you encounter an unfamiliar word in the reading passage, you should not stop reading to
open a dictionary to find the meaning of that word.
6. Cultural exposures, unlike personal experiences, can affect a person’s perspective.
7. Writing informative texts requires a lot of research. The author must check of the sources of
information are valid and reliable.
8. In a newspaper, obituary is where you find jobs, leases and the like.
9. Technical terms in academic text cannot be understood if one has enough knowledge of the
subjects.
10. Deductive is a form of reasoning from a specific to general, while inductive is from general to
specific.
11. As much as possible, a resume should be limited to a single page.
12. A lot of professions nowadays require a portfolio, it’s a compilation of your achievements.
13. In applying for a job, first impression matters. Make sure that your preemployment documents
are well - prepared before you submit them. They should also be free form typographical errors.
14. During an interview, answer questions even if it is not asked of you and share too many
information about yourself.
15. In writing, an author may have one or a combination of any of these purposes: to persuade, to
inform, or to express.
Part II. Fresh Diction: Avoiding Trite Expressions [20 points]
Directions: Sometimes, writers do not exert efforts to make their diction fresh although their word choice
sems creative. Clichés are expressions that are creative, yet they have lost their freshness and appeal.
In a separate paper, or your notebook; revise or paraphrase the following clichés, do not interpret or
explain. Each item is equivalent to 2 points.

Part III. Writing Correspondence [25 points]


Directions: Writing business correspondence follows strict conduct of professionalism. You need to
write an application or cover letter to the university of your choice for college. If you do not have enough
credentials, achievements or involvements, you may assume responsibilities and positions in different
clubs and/or represented the school in different competitions, among others. Your correspondence
shall include all pertinent information needed, kindly follow the format provided below. Your
correspondence shall be rated according to accuracy of information - 10 points, organization of ideas
- 8 points and mechanics or grammar - 7 points.
