Personal Reflection Paper

The document discusses the importance of pedagogical applications of textbooks to meet learners' needs in English teaching. Textbooks provide organized lessons, teaching procedures, and test preparation, but teachers should supplement them with other materials. Teachers should use textbooks as a guide rather than a mandate, modifying and adding to the material. No textbook is perfect or complete, so teachers need to stimulate active learning through activities, group work, and relating lessons to students' lives. The student learned about exploring textbooks and active learning techniques through coursework and microteaching feedback.

PERSONAL REFLECTION PAPER

Student’s Name: DANG THI NGOC TRAM

Topics: “How have you been aware of pedagogical applications of textbooks to meet
learners’needs?”

In the context of globalization, the need for language learning for the purpose of global
integration rises dramatically. Thus, language teaching has become a popular career that many
people are trying to pursue. However, to be a good teacher requires far more than just a wide
range of knowledge about target languages. It is a combination of a lot of factors regarding the
teacher’s teaching methods and their applications of textbooks as well. In the “teacher–learner”
relationship, there is an active mix of traditional and innovative methods, combination of an
activity approach with an energy-informational environment approach. Through some of my
classmates' presentations as well as after performing my own microteaching, I have gained a lot
of precious experience and also raise my awareness about the importance of pedagogical
applications of textbooks to meet learner's needs in English teaching which I would like to
present in this reflection paper.

In general, a textbook is a collection of the knowledge, concepts, and principles of a

selected topic or course. Most textbooks are accompanied by teacher guides, which provide you
with supplemental teaching materials, ideas, and activities to use throughout the academic year.
From my point of view, successful implementation of textbooks should promote active learning,
a suitable pedagogy will build a strong foundation where learning becomes meaningful and
support for effective realization for course outcomes. Therefore, textbooks is likely to be a very
important tool in your teaching arsenal providing teachers with several advantages in the
classroom.

First of all, good textbooks are excellent teaching aids which are helpful for teachers,
especially beginning teachers. These material to be covered and the design of each lesson are
carefully written down in detail and provide organized units of lessons. Textbooks are also a
detailed sequence of teaching procedures that tell you what to do and when to do it. Moreover,
they list some common topics in the actual test, provide students with enough vocabulary,
grammar lessons, exercises for the four skills. Hence, I think textbooks which are suitable for
students’ level are likely to show the outstanding final learning outcomes meeting learns’needs.

Secondly, textbooks are a resource for both teachers and students. As a teacher-to-be, I
need to take the importance of textbooks into consideration when considering how I want to use
the textbook in teaching English. To some extent, teachers don’t depend much on the abundance
of information in textbooks, they have to use them wisely. They may use them as a blueprint, a
guidebook, or an outline and discover what students know about a topic prior to teaching to
combine creative thinking and problem-solving activities when teaching English.

Thirdly, teachers should design the lesson based on combining that knowledge in
textbooks with lots of supplemental materials such as library books, Internet, CD-ROMs, etc.
When thinking about how you want to use textbooks, consider the following: Use the textbook as
a resource for students, but not the only resource, as a guide, not a mandate, for instruction, be
free to modify, change, eliminate, or add to the material in the textbook. Teachers must make the
best use of textbooks to involve students in problem-solving activities, higher-level thinking
questions, and extending activities.

Last but not least, no textbook is perfect, and no textbook is complete to some extent. I
would like to add some personal experience through actual teaching in real life and some
feedbacks from my micro-teaching, focusing mainly to delivery all the information in textbooks
is a way to destroy the whole lesson. The class must be extremely boring and tedious, so the
ultimate way I need to implement is to change my teaching methods in an appropriate way. I
have to supplement the textbook with lots of outside readings, create some games, student-
centered activities which provoke students to apply all the theoretical knowledge into real
context. Also, utilizing students groupings is a great method to stimulate learners because they
are more likely to express their thinking when talking with their classmates rather than to the
teacher. Creating a joyful and relaxing atmosphere in the class is always taken into account so
that students do not feel shy or hesitate to raise their own voices by some questions about
themselves or adding some funny stories, for example. In my micro-teaching at Tesol class, the
lecture gave me some feedbacks about delivering my lesson plan of the Topic “Films and TV
Prommames”. Of all his feedbacks, I have found that the idea of “Designing the TV Programme”
and “Writing Film Review” is the best one which is extremely relevant to my lesson plan. This
kind of active learning help move from being a sage on the stage to being a guide on the side.
The use of the game show in the classroom is consistent with the underlying assumptions of
active learning that potray students as actively engaged in their learning and their world. This
simple tool can help facilitate learning that draws on the higher cognitive skills .

All in all, I have learnt a lot of useful techniques, somehow known how to explore
pedagogical applications of textbooks in teaching and got more experience from my friends as
well as my lecturer after this course, which will definitely support my teaching career in the
future. With the development of society, particularly in english teaching, teachers have to change
and adapt constantly to the modern teaching methods which help students apply those learned
theoretical knowledge from textbooks into real life. Moreover, the must-have requirements for a
wonderful teacher are also to have a genuine love for teaching and students, understand their
characteristics, refer to authentic materials, design an appropriate lesson plans, and most
importantly, know how to use teaching approaches reasonably and effectively.
