Chemistry and engineering collaborated to transform aluminum from a precious metal to an inexpensive structural material. New extraction methods were developed using chemistry to make the process cheaper and more efficient, such as Hall's method which reduced the energy needed. This increased the supply of aluminum substantially. Aluminum's properties such as strength, lightness, and corrosion resistance led to its use in various products like cans, foils, and aircraft parts.

Describe how chemistry and engineering helped transform aluminum from precious
metal into an inexpensive structural material.
The now-common use of aluminum is due to the collaboration between chemistry and engineering. Aluminum is known to be the world’s most abundant metal. It is the third most common element and present as the 8% of the earth’s crust. It is derived from the mineral bauxite and is known to be the lightest engineering metal. Aluminum is utilized in large sort of merchandise which includes cans, foils, kitchen utensils, window frames, and plane parts. This is due to its unique properties: It has its physical properties such as; amount, melting point, temperature, and density. An example is aluminum metal is a highly malleable metal it can withstand a large amount of stress before it breaks or crumbles. And chemical properties example pure aluminum metal reacts with acids. It is likewise non-magnetic and non-sparking. It is the second maximum malleable metallic and the 6th maximum ductile. The increase in the application of the aluminum is due to its properties such as strength, recyclability, lightness, formability, and resistance to corrosion that's why it's safe to drink a soda can. The fields of chemistry and engineering developed new methods of extracting aluminum from bauxite that were cheaper and more efficient: Charles Hall developed a way to reduce the energy input needed to extract aluminum and coupled with the relatively low cost of hydroelectricity, the supply of aluminum increased substantially.
