Test 2 SEMESTER I, SESSION 2017/2018

This document contains instructions and questions for Test 2 in Mechanics of Solids II. It includes 3 questions testing concepts like stress and strain in thick cylinders under pressure, stress-strain diagrams for different material types, plastic zones in beams, and using Castigliano's theorem to calculate displacement. Students are warned that copying or cheating will result in disciplinary action including possible expulsion. The test has a duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes and consists of 3 printed pages.

TEST 2

SEMESTER I, SESSION 2017/2018

COURSE CODE : SKMM 2123

COURSE NAME : MECHANICS OF SOLIDS II

PROGRAMME : SKMM/SKMB/SKMI/SKMP/SKMT/SKMV

SMM/SMB/SMI/SMP/SMT/SMV

DURATION : 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES

DATE : 19th DECEMBER 2017

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:

1. ANSWER ALL THREE (3) QUESTIONS

2. ALL WORKINGS MUST BE SHOWN CLEARLY

WARNING!

Students caught copying/cheating during the examination

are liable for disciplinary actions and the Faculty may recommend
the students to be expelled from the University

THIS EXAMINATION PAPER CONSISTS OF (3) PRINTED PAGES ONLY

QUESTION 1

An external pressure of 10 MPa is applied to a closed-end thick cylinder of internal diameter 160 mm
and external diameter 320 mm. The maximum hoop stress permitted on the inside wall of the cylinder
is limited to 30 MPa. The cylinder has the mechanical properties of E = 207 GPa and v = 0.3.
a) What is the maximum internal pressure that can be applied?
b) Determine the maximum shearing stress (absolute) in the cylinder.
c) Calculate the change in outside diameter when the pressures are applied.
(10 marks)

QUESTION 2

a) Draw the stress-strain diagram for:

i. perfectly plastic material,
ii. elastic strain-hardening material.
(1 mark)

b) Figure Q2 (a) shows a simply supported beam ABCD under two point loadings at B and C,
respectively. The SYMMETRICAL cross-section of the beam is shown in Figure Q2 (b). The
beam is made of aluminium that behaves linearly-elastic perfectly-plastic with yield strength
150 MPa and modulus of elasticity 70 GPa. Find the value of P that causes the TOTAL DEPTH
of the plastic zone to be 10 mm at the most critical location.

QUESTION 3

a) State 4 (four) realistic assumptions when analyzing a structure using Energy Methods.
(2 marks)

b) Figure Q3 shows an overhead crane system. The overhead crane is carrying a total load (steel coil)
of 5000 kg. Given that:
E = 200 GPa
I = 275 × 106 mm4
A = 9510 mm2

 = 0.32

By using Castigliano’s theorem and neglect the strain energy due to shear force, determine the
VERTICAL displacement at the CENTER of the main beam. Neglect the weight of the beam and
the crab.
