(Template) Problem Set#3

This document contains 8 problems related to advanced solid mechanics. Problem 1 asks to show an expression for vorticity in terms of the curl of displacement. Problem 2 gives a strain tensor and asks to find principal strains and invariants. Problem 3 gives a displacement gradient matrix and asks to obtain strain and rotation matrices. Problem 4 asks to show that a quantity involving the strain tensor is invariant. Problem 5 asks about plane strain for a given displacement field. Problems 6-8 provide additional deformation descriptions and ask questions about strains, displacements, and velocities.

ES 621: Advanced Solid Mechanics

Problem Set No. 3

1 u u j
1. If ωij = εijk ωk and   (curl u ) , show that ij  1 ( i  ).
2 2 x xi
j

 10 20 0 
2. Given the strain tensor at a point: eij   20 30 10  103
 
 0 10 0 
Determine principal strains and the strain invariants.

3. An element, at some point P, is subjected to deformation given by the following

displacement gradient matrix. Obtain the strain and rotation matrices.
 10 0 0 
ui 
  20 30 0  103
x j
 0 20 10 
4. Show that the quantity eijeji for the strain tensor eij is an invariant.

5. Show that the displacement field u 1=Ax1+3x2, u2=3x1-Bx2, u3=5 gives a state of
plane strain. Determine the relationship between A and B for which the
deformation is constant volume type

6. The deformation is specified by u 1=4x1-x2+3x3, u2=x1+7x2, u3=-3x1+4x2+4x3 .

Determine principal strains and the principal deviatoric strains.

7. The Lagrangian description of deformation is expressed by

x1 =a1 + a3 (e2 – 1), x2 =a2 + a3 (e2 – e-2), x3 = e2a3

where e is a constant. Find the Eulerian form of description and determine the
displacement components.

8. Given that the motion is expressed in terms of xi and ai by

x1 = a1 ,
x2 = e t(a2 + a3)/2 + e-t(a2 – a3)/2
x3 = et(a2 + a3)/2 -- e-t(a2 – a3)/2
Determine (i) the displacement, and (ii) the velocity components in Lagrangian
and Eulerian forms.
