The Nature of Force: Grade 8 Physics

There are four fundamental forces: gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear force. Gravitational force is the force of attraction between objects due to their masses. Electromagnetic force is an attractive force between objects with electric charges. Strong nuclear force holds atomic nuclei together. Weak nuclear force plays a role in radioactive decay. There are also non-fundamental forces like contact forces (e.g. friction) and non-contact forces. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the gravitational force on an object.

THE NATURE

OF FORCE
GRADE 8
PHYSICS
Force
What is - is a push or a pull exerted by one
object on another object

Force? - the effect of which is to tend to

change or change the state of
motion of the body.
THE FOUR
FUNDAMENTAL
FORCES
There are two types of forces:

fundamental and non-fundamental forces.

1. Gravitational Force - is the force of attraction

between objects by virtue of their masses
Another examples of the force of gravity include:
1. The force that causes a car to coast downhill even when you aren't
stepping on the gas.
2. The force that causes a glass you drop to fall to the floor.
3. The force that keeps the Earth and all of the planets in line in the
proper position in their orbits around the sun.
4. The force that keeps Jupiter's moons located around the planet.
5. The force from the moon that causes the tides of the ocean.
6. The force that causes an apple to fall downward from an apple tree.
7. The force that keeps you walking on Earth instead of floating away
into space.
8. The force that causes a pen that rolls off of your desk to fall onto the
floor.
9.The force that causes a lock of your hair to fall to the floor after it has
been cut off.
2. Electromagnetic Force -an attractive force between
objects by virtue of their masses
3. Strong Nuclear Force - holds the
constituents of the nucleus of an atom together
4. Weak Nuclear Force - plays a role in the
radioactive decay of some nuclei.
TYPES OF
NON-FUNDAMENT
AL FORCES
Contact vs. Non-contact Forces- forces may result
from direct physical contact between two objects
called contact forces (e.g., friction) another type
of force does not involve direct physical contact,
they are called noncontact forces or “action at a
distance”
Contact Forces
Non-Contact Forces
Mass versus Weight - mass is the quantity of
matter that a body contains; scalar quantity -
weight is the force on a body due to gravity;
vector quantity The relation between mass (m)
and weight (W) is expressed in this equation:
W=mg - ( g ) is the acceleration due to gravity
with the value of 9.8 m/s2
So Why Do People Say Weight
instead of Mass?
Why Do Scales Show Kilograms?
