Introduction to Digital Oscilloscope and Digital
Function Generator
Oscilloscope
An oscilloscope is a device which is used to visualize the graphs and is used to display time-
varying electronic signals on a screen.

Function Generator
A function generator is a device which is used to generate different type of wave forms. Usually
it is used to test circuits. We can change the values of different variables such as frequency,
voltage and time to generate their graphs.

In Lab Tasks
Task 1
Connect the oscilloscope with function generator and take values of channel 1 status and time
base status. Generate a waveform (sinusoidal) of frequency 2 KHz and 20V peak to peak.
Visualize this waveform on oscilloscope and note down all the values.
Task 2
Generate a square waveform of frequency 4 KHz and voltage 0-5V and observe the result on
oscilloscope. Now set the duty cycle value at 25% and observe the changes in graph and note
all the values. Change the duty cycle value to 70% and repeat the experiment.

Task 3
Generate a sinusoidal of 1 KHz and 10V and visualize this on oscilloscope. Press ref and save
this waveform as channel 1. Now change the frequency and voltage of the wave and save this
as channel 2. Now recall these waveforms and observe the readings.

Post Lab
Features of Ammeter
 Measure current in Ampere
 Connected in series to the circuit
 It has small shunt resistance
Features of Voltmeter
 Measure voltage in volts
 Connected in parallel to the circuit
 It has very high resistance

Features of Ohmmeter
 Measure resistance in ohm
 Micro-ohmmeter is used to measure small resistances in circuits
 Meg-ohmmeter is used to measure large resistances in circuits

Answers
1. The X-Y button on oscilloscope is used to measure the phase difference between two
overlapping waves.
2. Yes, the amplitude change if we change the horizontal position of signal because
amplitude is the maximum value of wave. And maximum value changes as we change
the vertical position of signal.
3. No, the amplitude does not change if we change the vertical position of signal because it
only shifts the signal towards top or bottom
