1 Abstract:
The purpose of this lab was to introduce the oscilloscope and function generator and their
basic features, as well as to demonstrate how to use the instrument to measure and
analyze electrical signals. The lab began with an overview of the oscilloscope and its
components, followed by a demonstration of how to connect the instrument to a signal
source and adjust the settings to display the waveform. Function generator is used to
generate the sinusoidal wave of specific frequency and voltage. So, different waves were
generated by changing the voltage (keeping the frequency constant) and then changing
frequency (keeping voltage constant).
1.2 Objective:
The main objective of this lab are:
 To get the basic knowledge of oscilloscope and function generator.
 To generate the sinusoidal waves at different voltages and frequencies.
1.3 Introduction:
In electrical engineering, devices like oscilloscope and function generator play an
important role. These devices are very important to study the voltages and current at
different frequencies and amplitude.
Oscilloscope:
An oscilloscope (informally a scope) is a type of electronic test instrument that
graphically displays varying electrical voltages as a two-dimensional plot of one or more
signals as a function of time. The displayed waveform can then be analyzed for properties
such as amplitude, frequency, rise time, time interval, distortion, and others. [1]

Function Generator:
In electrical engineering, a function generator is usually a piece of electronic test
equipment or software used to generate different types of electrical waveforms over a
wide range of frequencies. Some of the most common waveforms produced by the
function generator are the sine wave, square wave, triangular wave and saw-tooth shapes.

1.4 Procedure:
The procedure is given as follow:
1. Connect the function generator with the oscilloscope through the knob.
2. Set the frequency and the amplitude on the function generator.
3. Observe the sinusoidal wave on the oscilloscope.
1.5 Experiment:
For this experiment, first the frequency of the signal is changed keeping the voltages
constant. The peak to peak voltages are set to 2.5V and frequency is changed to 60k, 70k,
80k and 90k hertz. The detail obtained from the oscilloscope is given by:

Fig 1.3 (showing details obtained from oscilloscope at 2.5V and 60k Hz)

Fig 1.4 (showing details obtained from oscilloscope at 2.5V and 70k Hz)
Fig 1.5 (showing details obtained from oscilloscope at 2.5V and 80k Hz)

Fig 1.6 (showing details obtained from oscilloscope at 2.5V and 90k Hz)

Now, the frequency of the signal is kept constant i.e. 60k Hz and voltages are changes to
3V, 3.5V, 4V and 6V:

Fig 1.7 (showing signal at 60k Hz and 3V)

Fig 1.8 (showing signal at 60k Hz and 3.5V)

Fig 1.9 (showing signal at 60k Hz and 4V)

Fig 1.10 (showing signal at 60k Hz and 6V)

1.6 Result:
The result is increasing the frequency increases the number of waves while increasing
voltage increases wavelength and vise versa.
1.7 Discussion:
The lab demonstrated the basic features and functions of an oscilloscope and function
generator, which are essential for any person working in the field of electronics or
electrical systems.
The practical exercises allowed to put into practice provide a great opportunity to learn
about the oscilloscope. We how to connect the instrument to a function generator and
how to adjust the settings to display the waveform. We also learned how to measure
various parameters of the signal, such as frequency, amplitude.
The lab also demonstrated how to use the trigger function to capture specific events in the
signal, such as a single pulse or a periodic waveform. We learn that the trigger function is
crucial when dealing with signals that are not repetitive or are difficult to capture due to
their complexity.
Furthermore, the lab provided insight into the various applications of the oscilloscope,
such as in the fields of electronics, telecommunications, and physics. The oscilloscope is
an essential tool in these fields, as it allows engineers and technicians to diagnose and
troubleshoot issues in complex electrical systems.
1.8 Conclusion:
In conclusion, the lab provided a comprehensive introduction to the oscilloscope and its
capabilities. The practical exercises great experience in using the instrument to measure
and analyze electrical signals. Understanding how to use an oscilloscope is a fundamental
skill for anyone working with electronics or electrical systems, and this lab provided an
excellent foundation for this important skill.
