Impressionism

Worksheet 1
1 a) Look at the picture “Impression, soleil levant”, painted 1872 by Claude Monet. Work in pairs
and talk to your partner about what you see.

1 b) Together with your partner, label where these colours and objects can be found on the
picture:

blue – grey – orange – black – opalescent – ship - mast - water – sky – sun – reflection – boat …

1 c) Discuss these questions with your partner:

What do you see?

What is the subject of the painting?

Which colours are used? How are they being used?

What effect does the picture have on you?

3

1 d) Read the following description of the picture. Look for interesting vocabulary related to
composition, technique, colour, objects. Then classify these words and expressions in the table
below:

Impression, Sunrise depicts the port of Le Havre at sunrise, with the two small black boats in the
foreground floating on a green-toned sea, and the red sun are the focal elements of the
composition. In the middle ground, more fishing boats emerge from the fog, while in the
background on the left side of the painting are ships with tall masts. Behind them are other shapes
that could be trees or masts of steamships, while on the right in the distance are other masts and
chimneys silhouetted against the sky. The painting uses loose brushstrokes, which suggest the
scene rather than mimetically represent it. For the colour, there is a base layer of grey in different
tones. There is also blue for the sky, green for the water and orange for the sun and its reflection
in the sky. The details are imprecise. Because of the use of colour it’s hard to distinguish sky and
water. They are melting together, creating a foggy, opalescent atmosphere.
