Renaissance and Baroque periods are vital components in the history
of arts. It shows cultural movement from one era to another. With this
transition of arts culture, it helped augment the styles and designs of
Key Concept/Skill for the time. They are interrelated, for the development of one era depends
Integration on how the preceding time is developed. The period’s intercultural
understanding shows how relevant one cultural time is. For these
cultural times, from Renaissance or Baroque, are culturally
connected.

Before/Pre-Lesson Proper
Teacher: Good morning/afternoon, class! Welcome to our arts Catch–
up Friday session.

Learner: Good morning/afternoon, Ma’am/Sir.

Activating Prior Teacher: We are going to start our lesson today with a picture. Give
Knowledge your observations by checking the column in the checklist. (See
(5 minutes) Annex 1.)

Teacher: Here’s a painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Start checking the


checklist now. ( Teacher shows a picture of Leonardo da Vinci)

Teacher: Time is up! Let us now have your answers. What are the
common characteristics that you have observed in the painting?

Learner: The painting shows a beautiful lady.

Teacher: Correct. What else?

Learner: The painting depicts real-life figure.

Teacher: Absolutely! Those characteristics you mentioned are


examples of Humanistic art in the Renaissance period.

Teacher: This morning/afternoon we are going to know more about


Humanistic arts as we are going to discuss the characteristics and
styles of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. You are then

Purpose/Intention (3 a. identify characteristics of arts during the Renaissance

b. write a reflection on the importance of the characteristics
of arts; and
c. create a tableau depicting the distinct characteristics
of arts during the two periods.
Teacher: Let us play the “Identify Me” by drawing a line from
the word to its meaning. Accomplish this
worksheet that I am going to distribute. (See Annex 2.) (Learners

do as told.)

Teacher: Now, let’s check your work. Please exchange activity sheet
with your seatmate. Now, let us see if you answer the activity
correctly.

Teacher: Number1. What is the meaning of the word artist?

Learner: Artist is a person who practices any of the various creative


arts, such as a sculptor, novelist, poet or filmmaker.

Learner: Characteristic is a feature or quality belonging typically to a


person, place, or thing.

Teacher: What about an artwork?

Learner: An artwork is a physical object that has an aesthetic and/or


conceptual value.

Teacher: Awesome! Let’s proceed to number 4.

Learner: Humanistic is relating to or supporting the principles of


human values.

Teacher: Wow! What about Renaissance?

Learner: Renaissance is a period in European civilization marked by a


revival of classical learning and wisdom.

Teacher: Congratulations! For those who scored 4 & 5, you did


great! And for those of you who scored 3 & below, don’t worry
because you will still meet these words in the
succeeding activities.
Teacher: To help you understand the characteristics and styles of
Reading the Key the Renaissance and Baroque Periods, read silently the selection.
Idea/Stem (See Annex 3.)
(5 minutes)

(Learners do as told.)
Teacher: From the selection you just read, identify the
characteristics of the Renaissance and Baroque Periods. Write
your answers on the appropriate column in the activity sheet
which I am going to distribute. (See Annex 4.)

Teacher: Considering the answers you fill in the table, what are the
characteristics of the Renaissance period?

Learners: It is humanistic in nature, Ma’am/Sir.

Developing Teacher: What does humanistic mean?

Learners: It is more on human nature. It shows real-life figures and

naturalistic pictures of human being.

Teacher: That is also correct! These characteristics are observable in


the 3 types of artworks (sculpture, painting, and architecture). In
other words, Renaissance period shows Humanistic art. How about
Baroque period?

Learners: Baroque period has a level of intensity.

Teacher: Correct! How does the intensity affect the artworks


(sculpture, painting, architecture) of the period?

Learners: Artworks like sculpture, painting, and architecture of the


period have more complicated designs and styles. The artworks are
classy and not simple.

Teacher: Yes, that’s right. The focal point of the characteristics of the
Baroque period is its complicated design and style. How will you
compare the characteristics of the Renaissance period and the
Baroque period?

Learners: Renaissance period focused on humanistic art while


Baroque period focused on complicated design and style.

Teacher: Indeed! You have understood our lesson.

Teacher: It is observed that periods or eras are related to each other.


Please give me the reason why.

Learners: Periods are related to each other because they are connected in
terms of culture and tradition. (Intercultural understanding)

Teacher: That’s right. The two periods have an intercultural


understanding. Why do you think so?

Learners: Both periods existed interdependently with each other just


like past, present and future. (Values Education)

Teacher: Where can we find this interdependency?


Deepening
Understanding of the Learners: This interdependency is found in their artworks. The artworks
Key Idea/Stem are interrelated from past to present.

Teacher: What must be done out of these traditional relics and practices?

Learners: Let us all respect the traditional relics and practices of the
different religions to achieve peace. (Values Education)

Teacher: Amazing! That’s the best realization ever! This time, you are
going to write a paragraph with 3 to 4 sentences reflection on the
importance of knowing the characteristics of arts during Renaissance
and Baroque periods in your daily lives write it in your notebook.

After/Post-Lesson Proper
Teacher: To sum up our lesson for today, fill in the blanks with the words
that will completely correct the paragraph. Choose your answer on the
word clue. (See Annex 5.)
