Stylistic Approach
teaches students how to look for and
interpret stylistic dimensions of a text. Students are made to learn how what is said
is said and how meanings are made. They are taught to know what makes the
language of literature different from everyday language, if it really is.
Advantages of the Stylistic Approach
Language is made up of words, structures and sentences and
literature is made up of these words, structures and sentences. Literature is
language in its applied form and prepares a basis for the study of language through
various points of view. Every piece of literary writing is different from the other. They
have similarities but are never identical. Every piece of literature is unique with own
peculiarities.
Why apply Stylistic Approach?
Because form is important in poetry, and stylistic has the largest
armoury of analytical weapons. Moreover, stylistics need to be reductive and
simplistic. It suggests why certain devices are effective. Stylistic is a very technical
subject, which hardly makes for engrossing, or indeed uncontentious, reading.
Characteristic of Stylistic Approach
Applies linguistic to literature in the hope of arriving at analysis which are
more broadly based, rigorous and objective.
Represents a promising area not only because stylistic analysis involves both
fields, but because such an analysis makes possible a more complex
approach to literature.
Focuses on the linguistic devices or application at the phonological, lexical, or
syntactic level, whichever proves to be meaningful in any kind of literary
interpretation.
Moral / Philosophical Approach
Critics believe that the larger purpose of literature is to teach
morality and probe philosophical issues.
Plato: emphasized morality and utilitarianism
Horace: literature should be delightful and instructive
