CHAPTER I
INTRODUCION
Mosquitoes can carry and transmit disease such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever,
chikungunya and west nile. At least two million people a year die from this disease.
mosquitoes are carriers, or vectors, for some of humanity’s most deadly illnesses such as
malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and west nile. Mosquitoes are public enemy
number one in the fight against global infectious disease. Mosquito-borne diseases cause
millions of deaths worldwide every year with a disproportionate effect on children and the
elderly in developing countries. Nowadays, we use some products like Mosquito coil to kill or
repel mosquitoes.
“Neem” (Azadirachta inaica) is a fast growing tree in Mahogany family Meliacease and
studies reveal that it has constituents that help to fight against mosquitoes. Likewise, the smoke
of burned Neem tree leaves can eliminate mosquitoes.
Hence, the use of Neem Leaves will be significant as a substitute in making organic
mosquito coil. Since it is organic, the smoke generated from it can’t cause bad effects in our
body.
Statement of the problem
1. Is there any significant difference among the organic coil made from Neem Leaves
compared to the commercialize biodiesel?
2. Is there any feasibility of Neem Leaves as a substitute in making mosquito coil?
Generally, the goal of this study is to evaluate an alternative solution to prevent the different
kinds of disease that mosquito brings especially, dengue fever.
A. Specific objectives
1. To observe the effectiveness of Neem leaves as an organic mosquito coil.
2. To compare the four (4) treatments with varying amounts of Neem Leaves in terms of
physical characteristic, effectiveness and its level of acceptability;
3. Make use of natural resources of our country to solve common problems caused by
mosquitoes especially dengue.
Null Hypotheses:
There is no significant difference between the Organic Neem coil and the Commercialize
Coil, in terms of effectiveness and their level acceptability.
Operational Hypotheses:
There is a significant difference between the Organic Neem coil and the Commercialize
Coil, in terms of effectiveness and their level acceptability.
This study will provide more ideas and information on how to produce mosquito coil out
of neem leaves. This plants are easily to be found and inexpensive. Through this research work,
the people will become aware that this coil can protect them from such sickness and illness
brought about by mosquitoes.
The study was limited to the use of Neem leaves as a substitute in making mosquito coi.
The study was done at Brgy. 4 San Francisco Sarrat, Ilocos Norte from July 20, 2016 o
September 20, 2016. The study enclosed merely in the determination of the acceptability of the
resulted product in terms of physical characteristics.
Definition of Terms
The following terms were defined to further the understanding of the readers;
Mosquito coil - a spiral typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder, which when lit
burns slowly to produce a mosquito-repellent smoke.
Neem leaves - a large tropical Asian tree (Azadirachta indica) of the mahogany family having a
bitter bark used as a tonic and leaves and seeds that have insectidal and antiseptic properties and
yield a medicinal aromatic oil.
West nile - a flavivirus (species West Nile virus of the genus Flavivirus) that causes an illness
marked by fever, headache, muscle ache, skin rash, and sometimes encephalitis or meningitis
and that is spread especially from birds to humans by mosquitoes.
CHAPTER II
The neem tree has been called "the village pharmacy" because its bark, leaves, sap, fruit,
seeds, and twigs have so many diverse uses in the traditional medicine of India. This member of
the mahogany family has been used medicinally for at least 4,000 years and is held in such
esteem that Indian poets called it Sarva Roga Nivarini , meaning "the One That Can Cure All
Ailments." Mohandas Gandhi encouraged scientific investigation of the neem tree as part of his
program to revitalize Indian traditions, which eventually let to more than 2,000 research papers
and intense commercial interest.
Neem is a very unique tree and neem leaves are the most complex leaves on the planet.
The neem tree has over 130 different biologically active compounds, and the neem leaf is one of
the most complex leaves you can find on the planet. Neem leaves have often been used in India
to treat viral diseases. Neem leaves extract, absorbs and eliminates virus. As a preventive
measure, you can prepare a neem paste and apply on the affected area. It is very useful for
treating warts, chicken pox, and small pox. This is because neem absorbs the virus and protects
from entering the unaffected areas. Neem extracts, toxic to herpes virus accelerate healing. Tea
prepared with leaves of neem and the application of neem ointment on cold sores relieves herpes
symptoms.
Due to its anti-viral activity, neem leaves are boiled and are used for bathing especially
for those who are suffering from skin ailments. This provides respite to conditions such as
eczema, cold sores and warts. It soothes inflammation by soothing itching and irritation. Neem
leaves also helps to remove intestinal parasites and restores healthy functioning of the intestine.
Moreover, Neem leaves also stimulates the immune system, improves liver functionality,
detoxifies the blood and promotes a healthy respiratory and digestive system. It is famous as a
malaria treatment and works for diabetes well. Neem leaves enhance biological functions by
strengthening the immune system
Lastly, Leaf oil shampoo is used for shiny hair and in the making of body wash and bars
of soap to reduce skin irritations from harsh weather. Neem leaf powder in vegetable capsules is
also taken as an herbal supplement to support the immune system and as part of a regime to
support healthy blood sugar levels. Neem powder tea is used for antibiotic and antiviral
treatments.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter discusses the general outline of the procedure used in the study. It includes
the research design, materials and tools, procedure, population and sample, and the statistical
treatment.
Research Design
The experimental comparative research design was used in the study where in the
independent variable was the treatment of neem leaves that was used in the making of the
mosquito coil.
The materials and equipment used to make organic mosquito coil out of Neem leaves and
testing the product are the following: Fresh Neem Leaves, candle, grater, foil, coil, Ethyl
Alcohol, Starch, blender, oven, mortar and pestle, and container.
General Procedure
The experiment was laid in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 treatments:
Treatment 1: Mosquito coil out of 10g of Dried Neem Leaves and 10g of fresh Neem Leaves.
Treatment 2: Mosquito coil out of 15g of Dried Neem Leaves and 15g of fresh Neem Leaves.
Treatment 3: Mosquito coil out of 20g of Dried Neem Leaves and 20g of fresh Neem Leaves.
