Polynomial Expression

A polynomial expression is a sum of terms involving variables and their powers, with the highest power term defining the degree. The polynomial P(x) = 8x^5 + 3x^4 - x^3 + 4x^2 + x - 3 has degree 5 since 5 is the highest exponent. Its leading term is 8x^5 and the leading coefficient is 8. Polynomials must only involve variables and their powers, with no other operations like fractions, roots, or negative exponents. Polynomials are classified based on the number of terms, with monomials having 1 term, binomials having 2 terms, and trinomials having 3 terms.

A polynomial expression P(x) is an expression of the form

anXn + anXn-1 + anXn-2 +…+ a1X + a0, an is not equal to 0

Ex. P(x) = 8x5 + x -3+ 4x2 + 3x4 – x3

Change to STANDARD FORM the terms are ordered from highest to lowest
exponent.
P(x) = 8x5 + 3x4- x3 + 4x2 + x -3
The degree is the highest exponent if P(x) has one variable.
In our example 5 is the highest exponent therefore 5 is the degree of the
given polynomial.
The leading term is 8x5 and 8 is the leading coefficient.
Remember POLYNOMIAL must have;
1.No square root of variables. ex. 2√x

2.No fractional or negative exponents. ex. 4x1/3 , 10y-2 + xy -6

3.No variables in the denominator. ex. 2/xyz + 9, -5/m

Classifications of Polynomials
1.MONOMIAL - consist of 1term. ex. 7x, -4abc, y/2
2.BINOMIAL – consist of 2 terms. ex. m+10, a-b, 3x+2y
3.TRINOMIAL – consist of 3 terms. ex. x2+ 5x+14, 6x3- 3x2+7x
4.MULTINOMIAL- consist of 4 or more terms. 2x 4 -5x2+4x -20
