1) When a 5% step is applied to the generator voltage reference with no load, the generator voltage increases smoothly while the excitation voltage also increases to maintain the new voltage level. 2) With the same 5% step applied at load, the generator voltage again increases smoothly but the excitation voltage increases more sharply. Additionally, the current and reactive power output of the generator also increase after the step. 3) When load is rejected from nominal load, the generator voltage increases above its normal level and the excitation voltage decreases, including becoming temporarily negative, in order to bring the generator voltage back to its nominal level.
