Homework #8
Due 12/24/2020
1. What is the main reason (only one) that bulk deformation processes like forging and rolling
are performed at high temperature, i.e. hot working? What is the main reason that a part
produced by hot working usually has poor dimensional accuracy?
2. Give two reasons why friction is undesirable in metal forming? What is the most common
lubricant in a “solid” state used for reducing friction?
3. Which rolling operation tends to have a more serious “crown” problem if the other
conditions remain the same in both operations? Please explain your answer.
4. How do we prevent “spreading” in a rolling operation in practice? How does the prevention
procedure change the exit velocity of the material (increase, decrease, unchanged) compared
to the original velocity? Please explain your answer.
5. Thread rolling is a major process of producing screws and bolts in industry. Machining
(specifically thread turning) can be used to produce those parts. Please provide two
advantages of thread rolling over machining and give your explanations.
