Instrumentation and Measurement
Instrumentation is a collective term for measuring instruments that are
used for indicating, measuring and recording physical quantities.
(Wikipedia)

An instrument is a device that measures a physical quantity such as flow,

temperature, level, distance, angle, pressure, capacitance, inductance,
voltage or current.

Electrical Instrumentation
Moving Coil Instrument:
The instrument in which the coil rotates between the magnetic field of the
permanent magnet for measuring the DC such type of instrument is known as the
moving coil instrument. Such instruments are used for dc measurements only.

Working principle: when a current carrying conductor (coil) is placed in a magnetic

field, it experiences a force. Because of this magnetic field the coil rotates.

There are two types of moving coil instruments

• Permanent Magnet Moving Coil (PMMC) type
• Dynamometer type.
PMMC instrument is the most accurate and useful for dc measurements.
Dynamometer type moving coil instruments can be used both on dc as well on ac.
11
Their calibration is same for both dc as well as ac.
