Subject : Operation and Maintenance of 4.06" 10M Tandem Side Loading Stripper Packer.
FEATURES :
The significant single feature of Parveen Tandem Side Loading Stripper Packer is that
the Inerlocking Packer, Anti-Extrusion Rings, Energizers and Bushing can be replaced
through the open door below the injector. Changing packers is easy through the side
door even with the tubing in the well.
After removing packer, anti-extrusion rings, energizers and bushings a full through bore
of 4.06" is available for easy access of larger tools.
Additional Features are :
1. Accomodates larger Coiled tubing sizes upto 2.875" diameter and includes a full
4.06" diameter bore.
2. The union nut can be 'latched up' while stabbing, the lower housing into the BOP
union.
3. 3 Nos. of Tie Rod arrangement provides significantly greater working space for
field replacement of sealing components and bushings.
4. Piston 'Close' and 'Open' ports are 3/8" NPT and both are located below the door
clearance opening.
5. Key components are 17-4 PH S.S. for optimum strength and corrosion resistance
and bushings are of Aluminium Bronze.
6. Convenient 3/8" NPT Gauge / Injection port.
7. Interlocking packer, anti-extrusion rings and energizers are interchangeable with
competitors. Various materials are available to suit specific well / service conditions.
8. Glass filled teflon anti-extrusion rings provides optimum Interlocking Packer
support / reliability.
9. Hydraulic control supply ports are 4 Nos. of 3/8" NPT, which require no special
fittings.
10. Unique 'Breach Lock' style Lock Flange provides reliable safety of Door closure yet
offers easy field operation. No special tools required.
11. The Piston is situated below the packer element. Having the Piston in this position

MATERIAL
This equipment is designed and manufactured to applicable API and NACE specs. This
equipment is also optionally available with certification to ISO 9001 Standard.
OPERATION
This Tandem Side Loading Stripper Packer is used as a stuffing box to seal off well
pressure while running/pulling coiled tubing on live wells. Pack-off of the packing element
(Interlocking Packer, item (25)) is accomplished by applying hydraulic control pressure
to the "PISTON CLOSE" port. Venting this closing pressure allows the packing element
to relax. Since the pack-off is well pressure assisted, no standard operating pressures
can be given. The minimum pack-off or "PISTON CLOSE" pressure that will achieve a
seal should be used to prevent undue wear to the packing element.
Applying hydraulic control pressure to the "PISTON OPEN" port retracts the Piston (7).
It will not normally be required to pressurize this port except when changing the
Interlocking Packer etc.,
To change packer elements, be sure that the last tubing travel through the Stipper Packer
is in the 'run in' direction, or downward. If the Stripper Packer is in service on the
wellhead, close the BOP then vent all hydraulic control pressure and well pressure. Grip
the Torque Knob (22) and raise up to disengage the Detent Pin (20) from the Lower
Housing (4). With the Detent Pin disengaged, simultaneously rotate the Lock Flange
(18) using an adjustable wrench engaged with the tang of the Detent Pin Holder (19).
Rotate the Lock Flange toward the open detent pin engagement hole in the Lower Housing,
i.e. counter clockwise. The Lock Flange will be properly oriented (unlocked) when the
Detent Pin engages the previously open hole in the Lower Housing. Amount of angular
rotation is 45 degrees.
Apply hydraulic control pressure to the "DOOR OPEN" port unitl the Door (5) is fully up
or open. The Interlocking Packer (25), the Anti-Extrusion Ring (26), Energizer (24) and
the Bushings (9 & 10) are visible/accessable after the Door is fully open. First remove
the Anti-Extrusion Ring then the Energizer and Interlocking Packer by pulling the
individual pieces (two) outwardly away from the tubing.
CAUTION : Upper bushing (9) and top and middle bushings (54 & 55) are free to fall
down. Give adequate support from below while removing the Packers and these bushings.
Be careful to keep the fingers safe.

To remove/replace the Lower Tubing Bushing (10). Use wide blade screwdriver or similar
thin, flat device, to pry the individual pieces (two) of the Lower Bushing up until completely
visible within the door clearance opening. Remove the Lower Tubing Bushings by pulling
each individual pieces outwardly away from the tubing.
Install replacement components in reverse order per the above description.
Apply hydraulic control pressure to the "DOOR CLOSE" port until the lower edge of the
Door (5) is completely down against the Lower Housing (4). Grip the Torque Knob (22)
and raise up to disengage the Detent Pin (20) from the Lower Housing. With the Detent
Pin disengaged, simultaneously rotate the Lock Flange (18) using an adjustable wrench
engaged with the tang of the Detent Pin Holder (19). Rotate the Lock Flange toward the
open detent pin engagement hole in the Lower Housing, i.e. Clockwise. The Lock Flange
will be properly oriented (locked) when the Detent Pin engages the previously open hole
in the lower housing.

FUNCTIONAL TESTS
Insert a test rod through the Stripper Packer from the bottom, or Union Nut end. The
test rod shall be solid steel rod 3 feet long and the same diameter as the tubing for which
the Stipper Packer is dressed. The lower end of the test rod shall be fitted with a steel
"do-nut" 3.75" diameter. This "do-nut" will pass through the Lower Housing (4) and
shoulder against the Lower Bushing (10).
Close or plug the "GAUGE/INJECTION" port. Fit a union box blanking plug to the bottom
of the Stipper Packer assembly. Connect hydraulic control pressure to the "PISTON
CLOSE" port which will be used to energize the packing element.
Stand the Tandem Stipper Packer upright and fill with test fluid through the union box
blanking plug. Air is automatically bled from the system through the open packing
element. Once the assembly is filled apply hydraulic pack-off pressure to the "PISTON
CLOSE" port. Next apply test pressure (through the Blanking Plug's port) and hold for
15 minutes. No leakage should occur.
NOTE : This is good time to experiment with various pack-off pressure to develop a 'feel'
for the packing element operating characteristics.
CAUTION : During any hydrostatic testing, the test rod should be aimed at a containing
wall. Should the 'do-nut' shear off the rod, the rod will become a dangerous projectile !!!
Bleed the test pressure, then the hydraulic pack-off pressure. Remove the union box
blanking plug and test rod.
The Stipper Packer has now been both functionally and hydraulically tested. Return to
operations. If storing for an extended period of time following testing, the hydrostatic
test fluid should be inhibited. Inhibited ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) is a suitable test
fluid.
Record all testing in a maintenance log. A chart recorder should be used to record the
pressure/duration of the hydrostatic and hydrualic control pressures.

MAINTENANCE
Frequency of scheduled maintenance will vary with the time and type of service and the
frequency of use. We recommend the following minimum maintenance routine be adhered
to :
NOTE : It is assumed that all parts and seals will be cleaned, inspected and coated with
a light grease, inhibitor, oil or hydraulic fluid prior to installation of new seals or
reassembly of parts. Any lubricant used must be compatible with the hydraulic control
fluid.
ANNUALLY
Completely disassemble the Stripper Packer, replace all seals, and functional/hydrostatic
test as follows :
1. Remove the Stripper Packer from the BOP.
2. Remove all internal pack-off parts and tubing bushings as in "OPERATION". Inspect
all components for wear and/or damage. Replace as necessary.
NOTE : Tie Rods (8) may be removed by unsrewing 3 Nos. of SHCS (29), to keep
the Stripper Packer assembly in two section for convenience. Otherwise it is not
normally required or desireable to remove the Tie Rods.
3. Unthread the Top Sub (1) from the Upper Housing (3) and remove the Sleeve (6).
4. Remove the Lock Flange (18) by removing 4 Nos. SHCS (28).

12. Remove Check Valve from Top Sub. Inspect O-Ring (49), Back-up Ring (50),
Compression Spring (52) and Replace if necessary.
CAUTION : When replacing the O-Rings and Back-up Rings make certain that
these items are in their correct positions as inidcated on the Assembly Drawing.
i.e. O-Rings face the pressure with the Back-up Ring supporting them to prevent
Seal extrusion/failure.
13. Lubricate Piston (7) with hydraulic fluid and reinstall into the Lower Housing (4).
Lubricate then Gland (11) and reinstall in to the Lower Housing. Install six Socket
Head Cap Screws (27) in to Gland and Lower Housing, maximum torque 50 ft/lb.
[Operation of Piston (7) can now be checked with hydraulic control pressure, or go
to next step]
14. Lubricate the Door (5) with hydraulic fluid and reinstall in to the Upper Housing
(3). Push down the Door 2.75" below the Upper Housing to expose the Lock Flange
Groove.
15. Install Sleeve (6) in to Top Sub (1) and secure with Retainer (16) and six SHCS's
(28). Install Injector Ring (2) in to Top Sub and secure with Retainer Ring (17).
