MEEN 1310 - Lecture1 - Introduction

This document provides an introduction to the MEEN 1310 Engineering Graphics course. The course covers tools for engineering drafting, lettering, dimensioning, orthographic projections, isometric drawings, auxiliary views, sectional views, tolerance, and threads & fasteners. Engineering graphics is a method of documenting a design using technical drawings and is expected in industry. Effective documentation requires conveying shape, size, material, tolerance, and finish of a part.

Introduction
• Engineering Graphics is a method of documenting a design

• It is a type of technical drawing, is used to fully and clearly

define requirements for engineered items.

• Engineering students must be familiar with standards of

engineering graphics as it is expected in industry
Effectiveness of Graphics language
1. Try to write a description of this
object.

2. Test your written description by

having someone attempt to make a
sketch from your description.

The word languages are inadequate for describing the size, shape and
features completely as well as concisely.
Documenting a part requires..

• SHAPE
• SIZE
• MATERIAL
• TOLERANCE
• FINISH
Why do we need Engineering Drafting?
• As a Communication tool
• Convey conceptual ideas
• Convey instructions to manufacturing team
• As a Problem-solving tool
• Improving existing design
• Infer and find solutions to existing designs problems
• As a Design tool
• Used to plan initial layouts for components
Composition of Graphic Language

Graphic language in “engineering application” use

lines to represent the surfaces, edges and contours
of objects.
• The language is known as “drawing” or “drafting” .
• A drawing can be done using freehand, instruments
or computer methods.
Freehand drawing
The lines are sketched without using instruments other than pencils
and erasers.
Example
Instrument Drawing
Instruments are used to draw straight lines, circles, and curves
concisely and accurately. Thus, the drawings are usually made to
scale.
Example
Computer Drawing
The drawings are usually made by commercial software such as
AutoCAD, SolidWorks etc.
Example
Elements of Engineering Drawing
Engineering drawing are made up of graphics language
and word language.
