Introduction
• Engineering Drawing is a two dimensional
representation of three dimensional objects.

• In general, it provides necessary information about

the shape, size, surface quality, material,
manufacturing process, etc., of the object.

• It is the graphic language from which a trained

person can visualize objects.
Introduction contd…
• Drawings prepared in one country may be utilized in any other
country irrespective of the language spoken.

• Hence, engineering drawing is called the universal language of

engineers.

• International Standards are: ANSI of America, BS of Britain,

and DIN of Germany.
drawing board.
This is the hard stable surface that can be tuned to some angle, where the drawing sheet is placed for easier positioning
and convenience during drawing
Sizes of Drawing board

Designation Size (mm)

B0 1000*1500
B1 700* 1000
B2 500*700
B3 350*500

Last two sizes are normally used for student

drawing
Maintainance
Instruments such as compasses ,eraser shield and other sharp instruments
should be kept horizontally on the board when not in use to avoid
scratches on the board Kept away from liquids and food particles

Wooden ones should also be kept away from direct sunlight and kept in
cool dry place and wiped regularly.
T-SQUARE
It is a T-shaped ruler consisting of a short crosspiece, which slides, along
the drawing board and a long horizontal piece which is calibrated in it

Instrument Box

Instrument Box
contains

1. Compasses,

2. Dividers and

3. Inking pens.
Set of Scales

Scales are used to make

drawing of the objects to
proportionate size desired.
BS recommends eight set-
scales in plastic/cardboard
with designations M1, M2
and so on.
Mini Drafter
It combines the
functions of T-square,
set-squares, scales and
protractor. It is used for
drawing horizontal,
vertical and inclined
lines, parallel and
perpendicular lines and
for measuring lines and
angles.
French Curves

French curves are

available in different
shapes. First a series of
points are plotted along
the desired path and
then the most suitable
curve is make along the
edge of the curve.
Templates

These are aids used

for drawing small
features such as
circles, arcs,
triangular, square and
other shapes and
symbols used in
various science and
engineering fields.

Pencils

The hardness increases

as the value of the
numeral before letter H
increases. The lead
becomes softer, as the
value of the numeral
before B increases.

HB Soft grade for Border lines, lettering and free sketching

H Medium grade for Visible outlines, visible edges and boundary lines
2H Hard grade for construction lines, Dimension lines, Leader lines,
Extension lines, Center lines, Hatching lines.
Lettering
• Plain Gothic
• Italics are OK
• ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
• abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
Sketching
• Drawings made without mechanical
drawing tools
– Free-Hand
– Ruler
– Simple drawing
program
From Course Text

• Should follow standards and conventions

HOME TASK
• Draw different line styles
• Different shapes used In drawing
• What is lettering and different styles of
lettering used in drawing
