Test 2 September 2020 Semester

This document contains instructions and questions for Test 2 in the course CEB 2053 - Process Modelling and Simulation held on November 19, 2020 from 8-9 PM. Question 1 involves developing mathematical models to describe the dynamic variations in velocity, density, and temperature in a countercurrent heat exchanger. Question 2 involves developing mathematical models for a 7-stage distillation column separating two components fed into the column at different stages. Students are instructed to answer all questions, indicate cancelled answers, show steps taken, and state all assumptions made.

TEST 2

SEPTEMBER 2020 SEMESTER

COURSE: CEB 2053 – PROCESS MODELLING AND SIMULATION

DATE : 19 NOVEMBER 2020

TIME : 8.00 PM – 9.00 PM (1 HOUR)

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

1. Answer ALL questions.

2. Indicate clearly answers that are cancelled, if any.
3. Show steps taken in arriving at the solutions and indicate ALL assumptions.

1. FIGURE 1 shows a hot liquid flowing through a tube side of a heat exchanger
with constant diameter D. The hot liquid exchanges heat with cold water flowing
in a counter-current direction with respect to the tube at constant temperature
Tw. There are no radial gradients in all properties but axial gradients may exist.
The overall heat transfer coefficient between the hot and cold sides is Uw.
Develop mathematical model(s) to describe the dynamic variations in velocity,
density and temperature by making suitable assumptions.

2. A 7-stages distillation column with a total condenser and reboiler is separating a

mixture containing components A and B as shown in FIGURE 2. The two
components have been partially separated and are fed into the distillation
column at different stages. The first feed stream is a saturated liquid with flowrate
𝐹𝐹𝐿 entering the column at stage 5. Feed 2 enters the column at stage 3 as
superheated vapor with flowrate of 𝐹𝐹𝑉 . Develop mathematical model(s) for the
distillation column and state all assumptions made.
