The Deciding Game: UAAP Season 82 Men’s Division on Singles - Adamson University
versus De La Salle University (Reaction Paper)

The floor is on fire when a specific sports game are on the deciding match. Audiences,
crowds and judges or scorers are also excited while watching the said game. On this deciding
match, the Soaring Falcons (Adamson University) and the Green Archers (De La Salle
University) will be facing each other to break the score of 2 – 2.

The deciding game between Adamson and La Salle in Table Tennis (Men’s Division:
Singles) was held in Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym, on Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City. Both teams
has a score of 2 points in their overall match up. The point system on the overall match was:
SINGLES – SINGLES – DOUBLES – SINGLES – SINGLES, which means that whoever wins
on the last set wins on the overall match between the two opposing teams. The match was lasted
up to 15 rounds, which was serviced by Adamson first, and alternate service by 2s on the
succeeding rounds, meaning Adamson is the first one to serve, next 2 service will do by La Salle
and the next 2 will be Adamson, and so on and so forth.

The game was on fire since it was a deciding match. First round was serviced by
Adamson, and at the same time won that round, gaining a score against La Salle. However, La
Salle won the 2nd and 3rd round. By looking their grips, I just noticed their grip styles in executing
the game. The representative of La Salle has a shakehand grip, which is a typical European type
grip where the head of the racket faces up, and your hand looks like it's ready to shake a person's
hand, while the representative of Adamson has a combination of the skakehand grip and hammer
grip. Setting that aside, I didn’t exepect on what might happen the succeeding rounds, but I must
say the overall match was quite interesting to watch. From 4th to 8th round, Adamson won, setting
the scores 6 – 2. I thought Adamson will be securing an easy win against La Salles because of a
big 4-point-lead, but unfortunately, my intuition was wrong. On the 9 th to 11th round, La Salle
setting their scores 1 point behind Adamson (6 – 5). On the 12 th round, Adamson scored yet
again another point, leading its way to victory by just getting only a one point to gurantee their
semi-final match against National University. Unfortunately, a sudden turning of tables
happened during the last 3 round of the match. La Salle won the last 3 rounds setting their
current match scores of 8 – 7, and at the same time, winning the overall match up and breaking
the score of 3 – 2 in favor of De La Salle University.

While watching, I was thrilled because the scoring board was favoring Adamson, but I
also shocked at the very end. I didn’t expected that La Salle still manage to win even though
there’s a big point lead. But in conclusion, both teams gave their audiences a great table tennis
battle to watch, and it was definitely, in my opinion, one of the most exciting deciding match in
UAAP history.
