Estimating of Missing Precipitation Data
a. From the i
Precipitation is estimated from that observed at
three stations as close to and as evenly spaced
around the station with the missing record as
possible. 61. If the normal annual precipitation at each of the
index stations is within 10 % percent of that for the
station with the missing record, use the following:
Pa + Py + Pe
pa fath tle
; co)
Where :
Pa, Py, Pe = precipitation values at index stations.
P, = precipitation value at station of missing record.
2. If the normal annual precipitation at any of the index
station differs from that at the station in question by
more than 10 percent (%), the normal ratio method is
used :

data service.steer
Example: 1
Precipitation station (X) in operative for part of a month
during which a storm occurred, the storm totals at three |
surrounding stations A,B and C were respectively 10.6,
8.9 and 12.2 cm. The normal annual precipitation
amounts at stations X,A,B and C are respectively 97.8,
112.0, 93.47 and 119.9 cm. Estimate the storm a

b. From the record of four stations :
Another method used by U.S. National weather service
for forecasting estimates precipitation at a point as the
weight average of that at four stations, one in each of
the quadrants delineated by North-South and East- eo

C. From the record of two statio1
Rainfall values of two or even one adjoining station, where three
adjacent stations are not there, may be used to estimate rainfall
record of a station, by applying the ratio method,
In this method the missing record of rainfall is computed from the
ratio of the rainfall for the particular year, value in respect of which
is missing at one station, to that of the rainfall of complete years at
both stations.
For one adjoining

month during which a storm occurred. The respective
storm totals at three surrounding stations A,B and C was

amounts at stations X,A,B and C are respectively 880,

Double Mass Analysis: 235 (St) Sti) ginal
Double Mass Analysis tests the consistency of the
record at a station by comparing its accumulated
annual or seasonal precipitation with the concurrent
accumulated values of mean precipitation for a group
of surrounding stations. It is used usually when the
gauge location is changed.
