Election season is truly heating up! Since the beginning of this year, we have seen those aspiring for
higher positions grandstand. Left and right. For the past couple of months, major television networks have
been airing countless political ads; some are being shown in almost every commercial gap! But there is
one thing that sets the tone for Philippine election season – mudslinging.
Who can forget the year-long Senate hearings on the corruption issues hounding Vice President Jejomar
Binay? Or the allegations of human rights violations committed by Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte? Or the
alleged fake credentials of Senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.? Or the residency and citizenship issues hurled
against Senator Grace Poe-Llamanzares? Or even the claimed sixty-three (63) consultants hired by
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, which includes his houseboy, family drivers, and friends, to name a few?
Veterans of Philippine politics will attest that this mudslinging phenomenon is not new. Our recent political
history has brought into spotlight Miriam Santiago’s Brenda, Villaroyo, Erap’s mistresses, Sonny
Osmena’s male rape, Pinky Lacson, among others. Our relatively short political history will yield a
thousand peso-bed and golden arinola of former President Elpidio Quirino in his campaign for a second
term, the so-called fake medals or alleged sex tapes of President Ferdinand Marcos, and President Cory
Aquino’s hiding-under-the-bed during the 1987 coup attempt.
The problem with throwing dirt against another is that it brings into fore an issue that is far less important
than that of solving our nation’s ills. Instead, they should focus more on what they can do to help the
economy of the Philippines.
We can list down many basis in choosing the next president but in reality we have limited information to
these people, so might as well narrow down our expectations. Based on their backgrounds,
achievements, accomplishments, integrity, purpose, and honesty to serve, we can try to evaluate these
candidates. FORGET ABOUT POPULARITY. Let us open our eyes to reality, scrutinize each and
everyone's capability to raise the living of the Filipinos, to address the current issues and to solve
problems in a very short span of time. It is time to be responsible for our own votes.
We have seven more months to choose who among them will get our vote on May 2016. We have all the
time to rightfully exercise the power to vote.
