Force & Motion: Physics For Grade 7-Cute

This document provides information about force, motion, distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration in physics. It defines key terms like force, contact forces and non-contact forces. It explains the difference between distance and displacement and provides examples of calculating speed, velocity and acceleration using common formulas. Examples include calculating the speed of a runner and the acceleration of a cyclist from their changes in position over time.

FORCE & MOTION

FORCE
• push or pull
• change shape/size
• stop or start an object
• change direction/motion
• Spring Balance – used to measure force
• N or Newton (F=ma)
• 1 N is a force that will give 1 kg object an
𝑚
acceleration of 1 𝑠2 (10 N = 10 kg object
𝑚
accelerates at 1 𝑠2)
Kinds of Force
1. Contact – direct contact between 2 surfaces or object
• Friction (static, sliding, rolling)
2. Non-contact – forces acting at a distance
• Gravitational – attraction (weight)
• Magnetic – repulsive/attractive
• Electrical – attract/repel
• Nuclear – hold nucleus together
1. What is the position of the
dog?
2. What is the position of the
tree?
3. What is the position of the dog
with respect to the house?
4. What is the position of the tree
with respect to the dog?
5. What is the initial position
of the ball?
6. What is its final position?
7. What is the position of
the ball at 10 seconds?
8. At what time is the
position of the ball equal to
5 meters?
Motion
• Can be described as a change in position

• Reference point – something stationary

and fixed; use to compare whether an
object moves by comparing its position to
fixed point
Distance vs. Displacement
• Distance – total length
• Displacement – length and direction

A B C

• A man walks 20 steps forward from Point A to B and moves 5 more to point C, total distance – 25 steps,
while displacement is 25 steps forward
• If he walks 15 steps backward from Point C to D, then the man’s total distance is 40 steps (25 forward+15
backward) while the displacement is 10 steps forward. It will become 0 if he walks back to original position
Exercise
You run from your house to a friend's house that is 2 km
away. You then walk to come back home.

• a. What distance did you travel?

• b. What was the displacement for the entire trip?
Speed, Velocity, Acceleration
• Speed – how fast object is
moving (m/s)
➢Speed = distance/time
• Velocity – speed and direction
Formula Triangle
Examples
1. Lydia de Vega is a world known
Filipino track and field athlete. She
can run the 100 m dash in about 11
seconds. What is her average speed?

Given Unknown Equation Solution Answer

𝑠 = 𝑑𝑡
d (distance) = 100 m
t (time) = 11 secs.
s (speed) 𝑠 = 100 𝑚
11 𝑠 9.09 m/s
𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
Examples
2. What distance would be covered by
a moving vehicle in 1 minute if its
speed is 5 m/s?

Given Unknown Equation Solution Answer

s (speed)= 5 m/s 𝑑=𝑠𝑥𝑡 𝑚

t (time) = 1 min. = 60 secs.
d (distance) d= 5 𝑠 (60 𝑠) 300 m
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑥 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
Examples
3. How long does it take to travel a
distance of 672 m at a speed of 96
m/s?

Given Unknown Equation Solution Answer

s (speed)= 5 m/s 𝑑=𝑠𝑥𝑡 𝑚

t (time) = 1 min. = 60 secs.
d (distance) d= 5 𝑠 (60 𝑠) 300 m
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑥 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
Try it!

4. The car is heading north covering a

distance of 500 meters in 20 seconds.
What is the car’s velocity?
5. Jim’s car travelled 100 m east, and 10
meters west in half a minute. What is
his velocity?
Acceleration
• Change in velocity
𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦
• Acceleration =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
𝑣𝑓 −𝑣𝑖
• Acceleration =
𝑡
𝑚
• 0s 1s 2s 3s 4s 5s
𝑠2

0 m/s 2 m/s 4 m/s 6 m/s 8 m/s 10 m/s

Formula Derivation
𝑚 𝑣𝑓 −𝑣𝑖
• 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛( 2) =
𝑠 𝑡

𝑣𝑓 −𝑣𝑖
• 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒(𝑠) = 𝑎

𝑚
• 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 𝑣𝑖 + 𝑎𝑡
𝑠
EXAMPLE
1. A runner covers the last straight stretch of
a race in 4 s. During that time, he speeds up
from 5 m/s to 9m/s. What is the runner’s
acceleration in this part of race?
Given Unknown Equation Solution Answer

t (time) = 4s
a 𝑣𝑓 − 𝑣𝑖 9 𝑚/𝑠 − 5𝑚/𝑠 𝒎
vi (initial velocity) = 5 m/s 𝑎= 𝑎= 1
vf (final velocity) = 9 m/s (acceleration) 𝑡 4𝑠 𝒔𝟐
