How does language change affect a particular community?
Language changes all the time because of social context and social context changes how we use
language. There are three ways in how language changes by time, physical space, or interactions
between social groups.
There are four effects of language change in a particular community: a.) how people think, b.)
how people behave, c.) how we view men and women, d.) how we do business globally.
a. In the recent TEDtalk of a cognitive scientist, Lera Boroditsky explained how language
affects how a community thinks. She gave a vivid example of an Aboriginal community in
Australia, Kuuk Thaayorre. This community does not use left or right instead, they use
cardinal directions. It would be difficult for me to use cardinal directions when speaking
about navigation, but for people who use the Kuuk Thaayorre language, it’s like a walk in
the park. The structure of their language makes them see the world differently.
b. We have been using language as a form to distinguish social status and class. Due to
language change, people behave differently when they talk with the lower or upper class.
For instance, in Japanese, we use the honorific suffix ~sama when we talk to a
distinguished and respected person. Example: Prime Minister Abe-sama made an
announcement last week.
c. Sexist language can affect how we view men and women. For instance, in Japanese, we
use the suffix ~kun for a little boy (e.i. Taka-kun) and ~chan for a little girl (Kimi-chan). We
distinguish gender in our language.
d. Due to globalization, we have adopted English as our international language. This has
affected a lot of people around the globe. Many people from non-English speaking
countries study English now to thrive in their careers. Due to this change, they are all
forced to study and speak English.
1. In your own opinion, can language change be a factor of gradual fading of the originality
in the structure of language?
I fervently believe that due to the migration of people and the changes in social contexts, the
original structure of language fades. For instance the difference between British and American
English because of the occupation of Europeans to America.
However, I also believe that the original structure of language will completely be eradicated.
As mentioned by the lecturer, Handke on the topic of language change, “Analogies in language
does not create new patterns rather, it extends the patterns that already exist in the language”.
With these new patterns, language becomes more diverse and interesting over time.
