Session 3:
Setting the Scene
Total Time Required: 15 minutes
Information: Read and discuss the different definitions of communications in the workplace:
Effective communication is pivotal and lifeblood of any sound organization. It is admitted that
there can be no organization without communication. The importance of communication in any
organization is emphasized with reference to the amount of time spent by the members of the
organization at different levels. (Rayudu, 2009 p. 218).
Communication: The word "communication" is derived from the Latin word communist, which
means common. In its application, it means a common ground of understanding. It is a process of
exchange of facts, ideas, opinions and as a means that individuals or organizations share meaning
and understanding with one another. (Rayudu, 2009, p.2).
Discussion:
Effective communication is not just about talking and listening. In an organization, it's largely
about building team-oriented relationships marked by co-operation, honesty, and mutual respect.
After all, no man works alone in the workplace. He has to work with others. And his success in
the workplace depends largely on how well he communicates with them and how well he works
with them as a group. These skills often referred to as "people skills" or "interpersonal skills"
determine the quality of his relationships. (Viswanathan 2010 p.46)
Goal: This activity will allow each member a chance to show off their communication skills,
and network with their teammates.
You are part of a team of 5 people. Your group will be tasked to create different game plans on
how to market a product of your choice. The team has to work together to identify a target
audience for this product, create a sales pitch and present it to the rest of the teams.
Each team member will have a chance to decide which group’s sales pitch is the best when
looking at the target audience that was picked.
