Mrs. Lee is a 75-year-old woman living with her daughter, Ms. Lee. Mrs. Lee shows physical signs of aging like wrinkles, dry skin, slow movement, and hearing loss. She prefers her native culture and language while her daughter has embraced American culture. They have different views which cause conflict. Mrs. Lee is socially isolated as she does not attend church or engage in other activities. Her daughter works long hours, leaving Mrs. Lee to do household tasks alone. Physical changes in aging include effects on the skin, ears, and musculoskeletal system like loss of strength and mobility. Social and mental changes can also occur as people age.

CLINICAL SCENARIO:

Case Study about facing of advancing age of the patient (Age related
Changes)
Mrs. Lee 75 years-old, looks tiny, shows wrinkles, dry skin, weight 72
kilos, slow in walking and movement, with difficulty talking to her daughter due
to some problem in hearing. They live together with her daughter in a
small apartment at the center town, Ms. Lee, an engineer. Mrs. Lee
speaks no English. Ms. Lee maintains her professional dress and is used to
giving directions and working with Americans. She works six days a week
and is seldom home before 10 p.m. She attends church, but her mother
does not join her. Mrs. Lee continues to wear her native dress and cook her
native foods and continually chastises her daughter for not doing the same.
While Ms. Lee works her mother cleans the apartment, cooks the meals
and does all the laundry. There are no visitors to the apartment, and the two
women do not take part in any local activities together. When Mrs. Lee must
visit the doctor, her daughter takes time off from work. They also consult
a native herbalist who prescribes teas, which Mrs. Lee prefers to her Western
medications.

2. Discuss your feelings about aging
It is not only understanding what growing older means and how it plays out in
your family and personal life but it is also indicative of what you think about old
age. When we understand how we feel and think about aging, it will impact
what we do, our relationships, and even our health. As the time goes by, our
body functions will gradually decline. We will feel the weakness, stiffness and
numbness of legs, having cognitive, physical and mental health conditions as
the effect of aging which we can’t able to stop. It’s the part of our lives and we
have to accept it.
II. PHYSICAL CHANGES of AGING
Body System Organ “Normal aging Change”

Skin  Wrinkles typically appear as a


result of aging. Wrinkles
develop form incorrect repairs of
injured elastic fibers and
collagen fibers.
 Dry Skin in older adults can be
simply a sign of age-related skin
changes or signify underlying
medical problems.as skin ages,
increases trans epidermal water
loss leads to dry skin and
reduced barrier function.
 looks tiny
Ear  Difficulty in talking due to some
problem in hearing are affected
by age. Aging also causes
tissue, glandular and muscular
changes in the jaw, tongue,
salivary glands and throat.
Muscoskeletal  Slow in walking and movement.
Elderly people walk at a slower
speed and tire more quickly
because of loss of strength and
mass in leg muscles
 Looking tiny. While the leg
bones and the skull remain
unchanged in length once we
reach adulthood and old age.

III. List down many social changes that affect the elderly.
 There are no visitors to the apartment and Mrs. Lee do not take part in
any local activities together.
 Mrs. Lee does not attend church.
 Mrs. Lee speaks no English.
 Mrs. Lee continues to wear her native dress and cook her native foods
and continually chastises her daughter for not doing the same.
