teamwork or overcoming difficulty. It can also teach you more things like math skills
such as counting by 2s or 3s.

Shatong/Shato/Siyato/Syato/Shatung - A Stick Game
Shatong or Siyato is not your common sports. It is a game played in the suburbs
and rural areas of the Philippines but similarly played in the Middle East that goes
by the name Gutalaguti. The game makes use of two sticks, one longer than the
other. The longer stick will serve like a bat and the shorter stick serves like the hit.
There needs to be two teams to play this game the hitter and the fetcher.
The concept of the game is to hit the shorter stick with the longer stick as far as
it can go and when this happens, the hitter will run to a marked area. There will be 4
marked areas just like in baseball and while the other team is fetching the shorter
stick, the hitter will have to make it to the home base hitting the first mark, the second,
the third and back to the home base. The fun part of the game is that while the hitter
is running from one marked area to the other, he or she must be shouting the name of
the game as in SHAAAAAATONG!
These days there are fewer and fewer children playing shatong. In the urban
areas, no one ever played the game or are even familiar with it. Sad but
true. Traditional games are being lost in this era of computers, high end toys and
gaming devices. While virtual games are fun especially when you have enough free
gta cash cards, it is still be nice to introduce other fun activities to your child. Let them
experience a game out under the sun, with friends you don’t only play with virtually but
friends you can actually bump with in a game of sports.
Skills Involved in Playing Siyato
1. Agility – Being in a game makes you move fast and quickly.
2. Coordination – You hit a moving target from distance.
3. Flexibility – You are able to move parts of your body in any direction
smoothly and effortlessly.

Activity: Let’s do it!
Directions: Here are the rules of Siyato. Perform the game and answer the
questions that follow.
1. Stick game, better be good at it - Players are divided into two teams.
2. Coin toss or ‘Jack en Poy’ to decide who will be the Player A and player B.
3. Equipment (Two sticks – usually made of “yantok”) the shorter stick (7
inches) is placed perpendicular to the elongated groove/furrow and the
longer stick (20 inches) to launch the shorter stick off the ground.
4. Player (Team) A hitter and Player (Team) B as the catcher. Played outside
on the ground where you dig or create elongated furrow on the ground;
you can even use the longer stick for the task.
5. Player A hits the wood with the stick so it catches air enough to be hit by
the stick.
6. The further the wood gets hit the more points you get (usually counted by
the number of stick length)
7. Player B on the other hand has to anticipate and catch the small piece of
wood to nullify the points and become his turn or looks forward to Player A
to miss hitting the wood.
8. The players or the teams with highest score at the end of the game will be
the winner.
