SL2001-394 Manoeuvring Systems Pneumatic

This document provides recommendations from MAN B&W Diesel A/S regarding maintenance of maneuvering systems on ships. It summarizes that insufficient maintenance of pneumatic control systems, including air supply, is a main cause of problems with starting and maneuvering systems. It recommends overhauling pneumatic components every two years and regularly checking system functioning. It also stresses the importance of air quality and maintaining air supply systems to prevent moisture and dirt from damaging control valves.

Manoeuvring Systems
Action Code: WHEN CONVENIENT

Dear Sirs

An examination of various marine incidents, recorded and filed in our Service

Department, has shown that one of the main causes of problems with starting and
manoeuvring systems is insufficient maintenance of the pneumatic control system on
the engine, including the air supply for this system.

Knowing that manoeuvring system problems can result in costly accidents and delays,
we would like to give some recommendations:

Pneumatic components

Generally, suppliers of pneumatic components recommend renewing non-metallic

parts and O-rings in the various valves every second year.

In line with the above, MAN B&W Diesel recommend that the functioning of the
system is checked regularly, by testing under controllable conditions, and that the
components are overhauled at least every two years.

Check of functioning

The enclosed diagram, illustrating the manoeuvring system in its simplest form for a
recent MC-type engine with fixed pitch propeller and electronic governor, shows the
functioning principle of the system.

As can be seen, checking of the functioning can be carried out while the engine is not
running, based upon the supply of starting air only. If the engine control mode is
switched to engine-side control position, the influence of the governor, the engine
room console, and the bridge control is eliminated. In this engine-side control mode,

the starting, stopping and reversing will solely depend on the functioning of the
components mounted on the engine itself.

Subsequently, the control mode is to be switched to the engine room console and,
finally, to the bridge control, where the checks should be repeated and confirmed at
each step.

If such checks are carried out routinely, failing functions will quickly be detected, and
faulty components more easily located.

Overhaul of components

When it comes to overhauling of the various valves, actuators, etc., at the

recommended intervals, the work is usually limited to internal cleaning of the
components and replacement of the non-metallic parts as necessary.

However, wear and tear of the valves will, to a great extent, depend on the sailing
pattern of the vessel and, in particular, on the quality of the control air.

Spares

Normally a vessel will carry repair kits for at least each one of the pneumatic
components in the manoeuvring system.

However, there is a risk that some of the valves may suffer from corrosion attack
due to moisture in the system, and such defects are seldom discovered until the
occurrence of a failure.

For this reason, and in order to avoid delays, MAN B&W Diesel recommend that the
vessel carry a spare component, complete, for each of the identical valve types etc. in
the manoeuvring system.

Air quality

If the starting air and control air contains water and dirt, even the best control valve
will eventually fail. Consequently, special care must be taken to ensure that the
control air supply system is properly operated and maintained.

This means that: - air bottles must be drained daily,

- filters must be cleaned regularly,
- automatic water traps must be emptied regularly,
- water and oil separator must be installed in the compressor or
in the supply line right after the air supply from the compressor,
- compressors must be maintained in order to minimise the
content of oil in the air.

The last item is particularly important if synthetic oil is used in the compressors as, in
many cases, synthetic oil will have a negative effect on the sealing rings in the control
valves.

If assistance with one or more of the above procedures is needed, you are welcome
to contact MAN B&W Diesel Service Dept., or one of our Service Centres, from where
assistance with troubleshooting in more complicated cases is also available.

Questions or comments regarding this Service Letter should be directed to our Dept. 4100.

Yours faithfully
