Abstract— Kuttanad clays are soft deposits of silt or clay found in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district, Kerala. It is well
known for failure of pavements and foundation structures constructed over it in the past. This is due to the weak soil chara cteristics
which the soil posses such as high settlements and low strength. Hence the need for enhancing the soil characteristics for construction
activities arises. This paper focuses on index and Engineering characteristics of Kuttanad clay treated with locally available waste
material rice husk ash (RHA) and quarry dust (QD). Soil was treated with varying contents of RHA to finding the optimum conte nt
which gave maximum compressive strength values. Soil is then treated with varying contents of Q D along with optimum RHA content
to find the optimum Q D content which gave maximum compressive strength values. The index and engineering characteristics of soil
such as plasticity index and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for all these mixes and at varying curing perio ds of 7, 14 and 28
days were determined. California bearing ratio (CBR) strength value of untreated and optimum additives treated soil was determined
afte r 28 days of curing. The results concluded that the addition of stabilizing agents RHA and Q D enhanced the UC and CBR strength
characteristics of soil considerably. Higher CBR values of soil- RHA- Q D mix enhance its potential for use as sub base for flexible
pave ment. Both RHA and Q D are waste products which may cause serious environmental problems if disposed improperly. Hence their
utilization in stabilization of soil is economically beneficial and is the best solution for sustainable environmental protection.
