What is multimodal text?

A text is considered multimodal when it combines two or more

communication modes, for example print, image, and spoken text as in film or
computer presentations.

DIFFERENT MODES:

 Linguistic: vocabulary, structure, grammar of oral/written language

 Visual: color, vectors, and viewpoint in still and moving images
 Audio: volume, pitch, and rhythm of music and sound effects
 Gestural: movement, facial expressions, and body Language
 Spatial: proximity, direction, position of layout, organization of object in
space.

Multimodal texts mix modes in all sorts of combinations. While often one
mode will predominates, more frequently, several months modes combine to
communicate a message or arguments.
EXAMPLE OF MULTIMODALITY

Scholarly Text

Here, the mode that dominates is written language. Obviously, the entire text is
made up of letters and words. However, there are at least 3 modes at work in this
example:

1. Linguistic - printed written text

2. Visual - the formatting of the text (such as the used of fully justified margins), the
choice of typography (different fonts, the used of brackets around the chapter title)

3. Spatial - the placement of the epigraph from Francis Bacon's Advancement of

Learning at the top right and wrapping of the paragraph around it.

Film or Television

There are five modes in this example:

1. Linguistic - the used of oral language

2. Visual - still & moving images

3. Audio - sound effects

4. Gestural - movement of people

5. Spatial - proximity between people and objects

Activity:

1. What do we mean by multimodal?

 Multimodal texts combine two or more modes such as written language,
spoken language, visual.
2. What are the modes of literacy?
 Linguistic: vocabulary, structure, grammar of oral/written language
 Visual: color, vectors, and viewpoint in still and moving images
 Audio: volume, pitch, and rhythm of music and sound effects
 Gestural: movement, facial expressions, and body Language
 Spatial: proximity, direction, position of layout, organization of object in
space.
3. Give examples of multimodal texts. (5)

4. Is an academic paper considering a multimodal text? Why or Why not?

 academic paper is also considered as multimodal text, through academic paper,
Student authors need to be able to effectively create multimodal texts for different
purposes and audiences, with accuracy, fluency, and imagination .
5. Which one of the five modes is most apparent when one looks at the following
images below: Visual, Linguistic, Gestural, Spatial, Audio? WHY?
 The image A is linguistics because as you can see the picture it is written language.
 The image B is visual because it involves pictures.
 The Image C is gestures, as you can see the traffic enforcer doing a hand
gesture.

Creating multimodal texts is an increasingly practice in contemporary

classrooms. Easy to produce multimodal texts are posters, storyboards, oral
presentations, and brochures. More complex digital multimodal text productions
include web pages, digital stories, animation, and film.

Student authors need to be able to effectively create multimodal texts for

different purposes and audiences, with accuracy, fluency & imagination. To do this,
students need to know how meaning is conveyed through the various modes used in
texts, as well as how multiple modes work together in different ways to convey the
story or the information to be communicated.
Example of texts to create

* The more complex the creation of text is, the more number of modes involve.

Simple Multimodal Texts

- comic/graphic novels, newspapers, storyboards, PowerPoint presentation, e-

books, social media, and podcasts.

- the meaning is conveyed through varying combinations of linguistic, visual,

gestural, and spatial modes.

Live Multimodal Texts

- dance cover, performance, oral storytelling, and presentation

- meaning is conveyed through combinations of various modes such as gestural,

spatial, audio, oral language.

Complex Digital Multimodal Texts

- live action films, animations, digital stories, web pages, book trailers,
documentaries, music videos.

- meaning is conveyed through dynamic combinations of various modes such as

linguistic, visual, audio, gesture and spatial semiotic resources.
