5. CONSTRUCTION
5.1 Preliminary Works
i. Traffic Management

Install plastic NJB barrier with hoarding continuous along the working area.
Temporary traffic signages will be placed at proposed location as indicated in the
traffic management drawing. Refer to Traffic Management Plan.

ii. Setting Out, Piloting of Services and Platform Preparation

a) The surveyor will set-out the piles position based on the construction drawing
issued. The survey control points shall be transferred from GPS Control Station
and TBMs.

b) Prior to commencement of spun pile works, detection of underground services

shall be made to ensure that the area is free from deep underground services (i.e.,
sewer pipe). Road diversion and relocation of existing utilities as per layout plan
shall be carried out to avoid any underground services or utilities damage during
spun pile work.

c) Platform shall be levelled to receive the piling rig. Steel plate or crusher run
maybe needed on top of prepared platform for piling rig to be seated so as to
evenly distribute its load over ground.

iv. Storage of Spun Piles on Site

Spun piles shall be placed at firm ground or with proper support (i.e. timber or
steel). They shall be stacked in such manner as to allow easy identification and
lifting.

5.2 Platform preparation

a) The diameters of spun piles shall be 350mm as indicated on the drawings as listed
in Table 1.2.
b) The estimated pile length for spun piles is 21m as indicated on the drawings as
listed in Table 1.2
b) The reinforcement of spun piles shall be High Tensile Deformed Bars.

ii. Spun Piles Survey and Setting Out

a) The surveyor will set-out the individual pile locations as per drawing and mark
them. Adequate offset pegs are also set-up to enable cross checking of the pile’s
location.
b) Each pile will be given with an individual identification number. The identification
number will be marked up on the piling layout drawing.
c) The pile position is set out on site using timber peg / steel pin.
d) 2 reference steel pins would be installed equidistant from the pile centre location
pin to serve as control and check against the initial pile after pitching.
e) The pile would then be pitched and positioned into the exact pile position such that
the reference pins are equidistant from the pile face.

iii. Spun Piles Driving Process

a) Vertical plumb-lines to sight the sides of the pile from two different directions
would be used to check and control the verticality of pile during driving.
Verticality also will be check using calibrated survey equipment
b) *For raked pile, the machine leader shall be adjusted to the required raked angle.
A triangle shape plywood with the required raked angle attached to the piling and
spirit level ruler shall be used to measure the verticality of the raked pile, as per
following sketch. Verticality also will be check using calibrated survey equipment

c) Regular checks in the course of piling using spirit level will serve as additional
measurement to monitor verticality of the pile.
d) A thick hardwood cushion shall be provided at pile head during driving and shall
be replaced at regular intervals.
e) Dolly to be used as and when is necessary in view of the different pile cut off level
from the existing platform level and it is to be placed in a recess in the top of the
helmet.

Verticality checking for spun piles during driven process

1) For the first 1 meter after piles have been driven, surveyor will counter check
the piles verticality using calibrated survey equipment.
2) Regular checking by surveyor will be done until the piles has been driven at
least half of pile length.
3) After welding the extension piles, step 1 and 2 will be repeated until the piles
already stable.

Sequence of work for driven spun piles

1) As per drawing, there are two types of piles position which is vertical pile and
raked piles.
2) Vertical piles will be driven first and then followed by raked piles after
completion of vertical piles has been driven. It is to ensure that vertical piles
will be control angle for raked piles.

v. Pile Jointing

Connection between pile segments shall be done by continuous all-round butt weld
along the circumferential groove of mild steel and plate of the pile as
recommended by the supplier. All welders engaged to carry out the welding of
pile joint shall be qualified welders. (accordance to JKR/SPJ/2010-S10: Cl,
10.3.4.8 (a) and 10.7.4 referring to Workmanship and working procedure)

vi. Piling Record

a) A full-time recorder man shall attach to individual piling rig to record
the blows of driving.
b) All pile driving blows shall record in the approved format and shall be
kept. All pile sets taken during driving shall be attached with the pile
driving record.

vii. Pile Penetration

a) The piling with respective designed working load shall be driven to required
set.
b) The final set of each pile shall be recorded either as the penetration in
millimeter per 10 blows or as the number of blows required to produce a
penetration of 25mm.
c) Enclosed herewith the modified Hiley’s Formula indicates the pile set (25mm)
calculation for reference in Appendix (1).

viii. Repair of Damaged Pile Heads

When pile head is damaged (if any) during driving, repair shall be carried out.
The pile head shall be cut off square by diamond cutter machines at sound
concrete and all loose particles shall be removed by wire brushing followed by
washing with water. If the piles are to be further driving, the head shall be
replaced and made good by concrete of an approved grade.

ix. Pile Tolerance

a) The piles will be constructed to the tolerances indicated in the JKR/SPJ/2010-

S10 – Cl 10.2

1. Deviation from specified position – 75mm’

2. The maximum permitted deviation of the finished pile from the vertical is 1

in 75.

x. Pile Testing

Where piles have to be extended for testing purposes, they shall be brought up to
the required level casting an additional length of the pile incorporating a testing
head as required by Static MLT and High Strain Dynamic Load Test. The
method statement for all the tests will be submitted separately

Test pile

The following testing shall be performed for the Ø350mm spun piles as per Bill of
Quantity as summarized in the table 5.7 (a) below:
