Turning 18: How to get it right
You’re approaching your eighteenth birthday and you know you’ll soon be an adult. How can you
cross the bridge from being a child to being an adult in a painless way, without falling into some of the
typical teenage traps?
As you get to 18, you may find that you have more money than ever before. Perhaps you’ve taken on a
part-time job, or maybe you have generous relatives who have promised you a sum of money for your
coming of age. The biggest mistake you can make is to go on a spending spree. Of course, it’s nice to
have some new clothes and maybe a holiday, but try to keep some in the bank for the future.
Another thing that adolescents often get wrong is the balance between their school life and social life.
As you reach the age of 18, you find you have a lot more freedom to go out with friends and have fun.
Of course, being young is a time to socialise and enjoy yourself, but don’t forget that your studies are
important, too. You’ve probably got important exams soon which could affect your whole life, so
don’t go too mad!
There is no doubt that turning 18 is a very exciting time of life, when there are lots of new
opportunities and exciting things to do. The key to getting it right is to enjoy the moment while at the
same time not losing sight of your future.
