Sample answer
Most young people choose to move to a different city to study, but many find themselves back in their
home town once their studies are finished. Although there are some downsides to moving back home,
there are also several advantages.
One of the strongest arguments for moving back home is financial. Renting a flat is not always
affordable for young people in their first job. If graduates live with their parents for a few years, they
can save the costs of renting and put some money aside for their future. Another plus is for finding
work. Despite being well qualified, young people leaving university might have very little work
experience and may find it difficult to get their first job. In their home town, they are more likely to
have contacts who can help them into work.
Despite these advantages, there are also some important drawbacks. Young people who have been
independent for three years at university might find it difficult to adjust to life back at home with their
parents. They might lose touch with friends from university and feel that their life has taken a big step
backwards. For example, they may find themselves hanging out with old school friends who stayed in
the local area.
All things considered, there are pros and cons to moving back home. Personally, I think the benefits
outweigh the drawbacks, as long as young people remain focused and see it as a temporary stepping
stone to a future independent life.
