Introductory Message

Welcome to the MAPEH 7 Self Learning Module 3 on Arts and Crafts Mindanao!

This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

Welcome to the MAPEH 7 Self Learning Module 3 on Arts and Crafts of


Mindanao: Crafts, Accessories and Body Ornaments!

The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

artists in expressing their artworks.

LESSON

LESSON 2: ARTS, CRAFTS, ACCESSORIES and BODY ORNAMENTS

Sarimanok
Is a legendary bird of the Maranao. It comes
from the word “sari” meaning cloth or garment and
“manok“ for chicken. It has become a symbol of
Maranao Art. It is depicted as a fowl with colourful
wings and feathered tail holding a fish on its beak or
talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll,
leaf, and spiral motifs. It is said to be a symbol of
good fortune.

Okir
It refers to traditional and unique carving and
prominent to any design among the Moro ethno-linguistic
communities. The name comes from an old Malayan word
which means carve or “ukit” in Filipino. It is referred to as
okir in Marano while okkil in Maguindanaon.
A new pattern now known as the okir motif has evolved from the
Indian stylized bird-like and naga themes and the Islamic tradition of using
flowing flowers, vines, and geometric patterns as well as local artisan styles.

Face Make Up and Body Ornaments


A distinct form of visual arts of the Yakan is the facial make –up
applied on brides and grooms. After applying a foundation of white powder
,dots and lines are painted in various patterns on the faces,creating the
effect t of formal and elaborate masks which match the ornate costumes of
the couple.The bride and groom wear different accessories.

Wedding attire:
Male
• Pis-hand-woven head cloth;worn as symbolic
protection from spears or knives.

• Kandit- 15-m belt or sash made of gilim (red cloth)


• Shirts that are believed to be bullet proof with Arabic script designs
prepared by imams and hadjis.
Female
• Short skirt over trousers

• Saruk- hat worn to add elegance
Ornaments
• Crocodile tooth necklace for fortune
• Triangular amulets with symbols wrapped in black cloth(anting-
anting) against bullets
• Snake bone belts to guard from pain
• Maniktegiyas- a necklace or bracelet of beads from dried fruit seeds
to protect from illness caused by evil spirits
• Maniksembulan- necklace or bracelets made of a bamboo stems cut
into short pieces: serves as added protection
Functional articles:
• Pegupaan-bamboo container for chewing
betel nut
• Lutuan- a small bronze box with engravings
carried at the waist

T’boli Accessories
1. Hilot –is a heavy brass belt worn by women
during festivals. The T’boli nobility wear it with
bracelets and anklets, furnished with ball-bearings
that make a sound as the wearer walks. The bells that
are hung from the distinctive brass or beaded belts
signal the approach of a woman.

2. Suwaltimimotis – a wooden comb with colored


glass beads hanging from it,worn toward the back of
the head.

Brass Making-Kulintang
The kulintang is a musical instrument
composed of eight different-sized brass gongs
laid upon a wooden rack.
It is made of brass with intricate designs
and embossed top where it can be hit by
wooden mallets to produce music.Other brass
instruments include the gandang,the two
headed cylindrical drum,as well as the
duahanagong pair consisting of the bua ( a giant sized gong) and pulakan
( a narrow shaped knobbed gong).

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: SARIMANOK PAPER LAYERING ART

Materials:
• Crayons
• Pair of scissors
• White Glue
• Hot glue stick
• Hot glue gun
Procedures:
1. Color all the sarimanok images using crayons. Use same colors you used
on the identical areas.
2. Cut out all three images.
3. Apply thin coat of white glue on top of the images then let it sit for a while
until it turns to clear solid.
4. Glue sarimanok image 3 on top of image 2 on top of image 1. Use hot glue
to stick them together but leave a small gap between images. Leave the
glue to cool down without flattering it. This will add a shadow effect on
your artwork.

WRAP-UP

Mindanao is the second largest island of the Philippines at the southern end
of the archipelago .It’s culture consists of mostly Muslim or “Moro” people. It is also
composed of other ethnic groups such as Maranao,Tausug,Banguingi, and
indigenous tribes known as Lumad.
Mindanao is one of the Philippine Island that rich in arts and crafts that
reminisce the Philippine culture. Some of these are Sarimanok, the legendary bird
of Maranao.Okir refer to traditional and unique carving and prominent to any
design among the Moro ethno-linguistic communities.
Face Make Up and Body Ornaments refers to distinct form of visual arts of
the Yakan is the facial make up applied on brides and grooms.

Direction: Based on our discussion choose at least one tribe and draw some
of their arts and crafts. Briefly explain what makes you attracted on their arts.

VALUING
Mindanao referred to, as “The land of Promise”. It also has the largest
concentration of ethno-linguistic groups and culturally diverse island.
There is an infinite variety of tradition and culture--one group is never the
same as another. Underneath the seeming diversity, however, lies a unifying body
of commonly held system of values, social structures, beliefs, practices, and
traditions which give the Filipinos a collective identity as a people. These groups
are mostly Muslims from the Badjao,Iranun,Jama Mapun, Kalagan, Manobo,
Maguindanao, Sama Pangutaran, Samal, Sangil, Tausug, and Yakan groups. Other
groups are the Lumads, or those who have maintained their indigenous beliefs
tribes and tradition instead of converting to Islam or Christianity.
Maranao means “People of the lake “ referring to the people who occupy the
lands surrounding Lake Lanao.The Maranaos are known for their Malong.The
Malong is a traditional Filipino tube skirt that is made of hand woven or machine
made multi colored cotton cloth.
Basilan is the home to the Yakans.They are popular for their skills in
weaving.They weave very intricate designs in their textikes,which they use for their
clothes and other accessories.
Students Activity: Mindanao’s Quarantine Wedding
Direction: Imagine you are a groom or bride on today’s pandemic, living in
the community of Mindanao. Portray yourself using the different accessories and
apply facial make up that we had discussed a while ago.
