The Nike Shoe Investigation

On May 27, 1990 the freighter Hansa Carrier, enroute from

Korea to the U.S., encountered a severe North Pacific storm.
During the storm, a large wave washed twenty-one shipping
containers overboard. Five of these 21 containers held a
shipment of approximately 80,000 Nike shoes ranging from
children's shoes to large hiking boots. It has been estimated
that four of the five containers opened into the stormy
waters, releasing over 60,000 shoes into the North Pacific Ocean.

The shoes washed ashore one at a time. Despite a year in

the ocean, much of the footwear was in fine shape and
wearable after washing. Unfortunately, the shoes were not tied
to one another so that matching pairs did not always reach the
beach together. Each shoe however, had an identifying serial
number. As people found them, they held swap meets to find
matched pairs

The accident turned into a scientific gold mine. With

information on the locations where the shoes were found,
scientists were able to use the spill to test and calibrate their
ocean current model.

In this investigation we will consider the starting point for the

ocean adventure these shoes had, look at the places where
shoes washed ashore, then make some conclusions about the
general circulation patterns in the Pacific Ocean.

Your job is to find your matching Nike shoe that is scattered on

the shores of MSN, plot its location (along with the locations of
other found shoes), and answer questions about this occurrence.
Directions

1.. QUIETLY search the halls of MSN for your matching shoe. (If I can hear you talking, it means you
are talking too loud. I will not hesitate to take away your sheet and give you an F on this assignment.)

2.. Once you have located your matching shoe record its location.

3 Find and record the 9 other locations that your classmates found their shoes (including your
location, there is a total of 10 different locations that shoes were found).

4. Return to Mrs. Matzka’s classroom and plot your coordinates and label map.

QUESTIONS (Just write the answers in complete sentences. )

1. Summary of what happened: the real story. 5 sentences
minimum

2. What do we call the path the Nike shoes took?

3. What causes the surface currents to flow in this pattern?

(Need to have a full answer that includes Coriolis Effect and
wind currents)

4. Explain why all of the Nike shoes didn’t end up in the

same location.

On the map:
1. Label the 5 surface currents that impacted the shoes.
2. Label the 2 wind currents that impacted the shoes.
3. Label the gyre that impacted the shoes.
4. Add the location of the spill with an X & the date.
5. Add the year from the dates shoes washed to each place.
