This experiment aims to determine which of two popular margarines in Jamaica, coco or hemp, is healthier. It is hypothesized that hemp margarine requires more potassium manganate solution to reach its endpoint, indicating it contains more unsaturated fats. The experiment involves titrating samples of each margarine with a potassium manganate solution and recording the volumes needed to reach the endpoint, a color change. The margarine requiring the larger volume will be considered healthier based on higher unsaturated fat content.

Problem statement: Two brands of margarine are consumed by the
majority in Jamaica. Coco margarine made from coconut and hemp
margarine (hemp oil) in marijuana plant. The heart foundation of Jamaica wants to recommend the healthier margarine to the population. Plan and design an experiment to determine which margarine is healthier
Hypothesis: Hemp margarine is the healthier margarine and requires
more KMnO4 to reach its end point.
Aim: To determine which margarine is healthier by adding acidified
1. Obtain three pounds (3lbs) of both Hemps and Coco margarines.
2. Set up the Bunsen burner apparatus, which includes the Bunsen burner, tripod stand and wire gauze. 3. Gather two beakers. Label one H to represent Hemps margarine and the other C to represent Coco margarine. 4. Place the beakers on the Bunsen burner apparatus to melt the margarines. 5. Place the melted margarines in a 250cm3 volumetric flask until they both reach the mark at the neck of it. 6. Fill the burette with Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) and record its initial volume. 7. Measure 25cm3 of melted Hemp margarine and add it to a conical flask. 8. Titrate the Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) with the Hemp margarine until the solution remains purple. 9. Record the final volume of the Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4). 10. Repeat steps 6 to 9 two more times. 11. Repeat steps 6 to 10 for the Coco margarine.
Variables:
1. Manipulated: The types of margarine (Hemp and Coco margarine)
2. Controlled: The amount of margarine utilized 3. Responding: The volume of Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) utilized until the end point of the titration is reached.
Final Volume Initial Volume Volume of Solution (Final-Initial volumes) When Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) is titrated against both Hemp and Coco margarines it is expected to change color from purple to colorless when they have reached their end point. Both Hemp and Coco margarines are expected to require different volumes of Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) for a complete color change to occur.
Interpretation of Data: The margarines are expected to require
different amounts of Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) during the titration because they are composed of different physical and chemical properties. The color of the Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) changed from purple to colorless as a result of the margarine solutions reducing it. The margarine that requires the more Potassium Manganate (VII) (KMnO4) for color change will be considered as the margarine which has the most unsaturated fats. Hence, the margarine which is considered to have the most unsaturated will be the healthier of the two.
Assumption: It can be assumed that Hemp margarine is the healthier
margarine.
Limitations: The quantity of margarine might not be enough.
Precaution: Ensure that the properties or components of both Hemp
