COMPLEX NUMBERS

REAL Imaginary
NUMBERS numbers

Aim : What are imaginary and complex numbers ?

Solve for x : x2 +1 = 0

x2 = -1

x=√ ?

A negative number cannot have a real square root

Hence there is a need to extend the system of real numbers to a system in

which we can find out the square root of negative numbers.

IMAGINARY NUMBERS -DEFINITION

The square root of a negative number is called an imaginary number.

The imaginary number 1 = i , is called iota.

We can also write i2 = -1.

EXAMPLE -1 :
Simplify : √ = √
= √ √
= i √
= 2√ i
EXAMPLE 2:

DETERMINE THE PRODUCT : √ √

√ √ = (6i) (7i)
= 42 i2
= - 42
DEFINITION OF COMPLEX NUMBERS

STANDARD FORM
z=a+ib Img(z).

Re(z)
A number of the form z = a + i b, where a, b  R is called a complex number
in its standard form , where a is called the real part of z, denoted by Re(z)
and b is called the imaginary part of z denoted by Img(z).

For example z = 4-6i , z= 2i , z=7 are examples of complex numbers .

Equality of two complex numbers

Two complex numbers are equal if their real parts are equal and imaginary
parts are equal.

Let z1 and z2 be two complex numbers , such that z1 = a + i b and z2 = c + i d

If a+bi = c+di
then , a = c, and b = d
+
EXAMPLE -1 : Find the real value of x,y if : 2y+(3x-y)i = 5-2i
Solution : Equating the real part :
2y =5 i.e y=5/2
Equating the imaginary part :
3x - y = - 2
3x - 5/2 = - 2
3x = -2+5/2
x =1/6.

Example -2 : Find the real value of x, y if (3y-2)+i (7-2x) =0

Solution : Equating the real and imaginary part
3y-2 =0 i.e y = 2/3
7-2x = 0 i.e x = 7/2
INTEGRAL POWERS OF IOTA(i) (The imaginary number 1 = i)
i0 =1
i1 = i
i2=-1
i3= i2.i = -1(i) = -i
i4= i3.i = -i(i)= -i2 = +1
It follows for any integer k , i4k =1.

Hence : i2=-1, i3 = -i , i4= 1 , i4k =1

EXAMPLE-1 : Evaluate : i9+i19

Solution : i9+i19 = i8ii + i16i3
=(i4)2i +(i4)4i3.
= 1(i) +1(-i) ( i4k =1 & i3= -i)
= i-i
=0

EXAMPLE-3 : FIND i18.

EXAMPLE-4 : FIND i-25

ALGEBRA OF TWO COMPLEX NUMBERS

Addition of complex numbers :

Let z1 = a + i b and z2 = c + id , be any two complex numbers ,then

their sum z1 + z2 is defined as follows:
z1 + z2 = (a+c) +i(b+d) which is again a complex number .
EXAMPLE : Find the sum of 2+i3 and 5+6i
SOLUTION : ( 2+i3) + (5+6i) = (2+5) +i( 3+6)
=7 +11i.

DIFFERENCE OF TWO COMPLEX NUMBERS

Let z1 = a + ib and z2 = c + id , be any two complex numbers , then their

difference z1 - z2 is defined as follows:
z1 - z2 = z1+ (-z2)
EXAMPLE : Find the difference of 2+i3 and 5+6i
SOLUTION : ( 2+i3) - (5+6i) = 2+3i +(-5-6i)
= -3 -3i.
