WAVES
GENERAL WAVE PROPERTIES
WAVEs
• Disturbance that transfers energy without the
movement of the medium.
• Regular repeating disturbance in the medium
TYPES OF WAVES
Longitudinal Wave
• Disturbance is parallel to the direction of wave

Transverse Wave
• Particle vibration is perpendicular to the direction of the wave.

k
TRANSVERSE WAVES
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
GENERAL REPRESANTATION OF A
WAVE
• speed:
Distance travelled by a wave per unit time

• Wave length:
distance by a complete wave, from one
trough/crest to the next successive trough/crest

• Amplitude:
maximum displacement from rest position

• Frequency:
number of complete waves per seconds (Hz)

• Cycle:
1 complete wave

• Period:
Time it takes to complete a cycle is the period
WAVE FRONT

Wave Front:
Lines perpendicular to the direction of the wave

Distance between 2 successive wave front = wavelength

i) The frequency
ii) The period
iii) The velocity of the wave
FORMATION OF WATER WAVES

if you put your finger into the water, you will

create circles, waves. This happens because we
acted on the water mechanically. Wind affects
water in the same way – mechanically.
THE RIPPLE TANK EXPERIMENTS
RELECTION OF WAVES
1. Place a straight barrier in the
tank.
2. Send a series of waves across
the surface of the water.

The barrier will behave as if it is a

mirror – it will reflect the water
waves

angle of incoming water waves

(angle of incidence) = the angle of
reflection.
REFRACTION OF WAVES
Refraction:
change in speed and direction of a
wave

When the water waves come into

contact with the barrier, water depth
decreases.

The direction and the velocity which

the wave is travelling in changes

Sound and light waves behave in

exactly the same way
