Building Construction I-Lecture 1A (History)

Building construction has evolved significantly over time from simple shelters that lasted only a few days or months to more durable structures used for housing, food storage, and ceremonies. Early shelters were made from perishable natural materials like leaves and animal hides, while later structures incorporated more durable materials like stone, timber, and eventually modern synthetic materials. As construction techniques advanced, buildings grew taller and could better regulate interior environments for human comfort through advances in materials science and construction machinery. Proper construction according to guidelines is important to successfully implement building designs and realize intended structures.

Building

Construction I

LECT. AR. PRADIP POKHAREL

LECTURE: IA HISTORY
Building construction is the techniques
and industry involved in the assembly and
erection of structures, primarily those used to
provide shelter. The basic needs of human being
are food, clothing and a shelter.

Construction is an ancient human activity. It

began with the purely functional need for a
controlled environment to moderate the effects
of climate.

Constructed shelters were one means by which

human beings were able to adapt themselves to
a wide variety of climates and become a global
species.
Human shelters were at
first very simple and
perhaps lasted only a few
days or months. Over
time, however, even
temporary structures
evolved into such highly
refined forms as the igloo
Gradually more durable structures began to
appear, particularly after the advent
of agriculture, when people began to stay in one
place for long periods.

The first shelters were dwellings, but later other

functions, such as food storage and ceremony,
were housed in separate buildings.

Some structures began to have symbolic as well

as functional value, marking the beginning of
the distinction between architecture and
building.
The history of building is marked by several
trends. One is the increasing durability of the
materials used.

Early building materials were perishable,

such as leaves, branches, and animal hides.

Later, more durable natural materials such as

clay, stone, and timber and,
finally, synthetic materials such
as brick, concrete metals, and plastics were
used.

Another is a quest for buildings of ever

greater height and span; this was made
possible by the development of stronger
materials and by knowledge of how materials
behave and how to exploit them to greater
advantage.

A third major trend involves the degree of

control exercised over the
interior environment of buildings:
Increasingly precise regulation of air
temperature, light and sound levels, humidity,
odors, air speed, and other factors that affect
human comfort has been possible.

Yet another trend is the change in energy

available to the construction process, starting
with human muscle power and developing
toward the powerful machinery used today.
Now the art of creating the structure which was
a shelter in the primitive stages, employed
modern techniques to make the structure
satisfy the practical needs as well as to
meet the aesthetical requirements.

A man conceived an idea of intended structure,

assessed the requirements in accommodation,
planned and designed the structure to suit its
purpose giving due thought to site, climate,
character and style of the building.

According to National Building Code of India

Building is ‘Any structure for whatsoever
purpose and of whatsoever materials
constructed and every part there of whatever
used for human habitation or not, includes all
the structural elements like foundation, plinth,
walls, floors, roofs, etc.
Discussion
How Building Construction is related to building
designing and working drawings?

Is there are relation of building construction

with others structural subjects and drawings?

How does building construction assist in

implementation of design outputs?

Why are guidelines adopted in construction?
